UDF stand on Waqf will sacrifice minority interests, says Pinarayi Vijayan

The United Democratic Front (UDF) government’s stand in the Supreme Court that it will implement Section 14 of the Union government’s Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) Act, or the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, will sacrifice minority interests and adversely affect the writ petitions on the matter pending in the Supreme Court, Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday. In a statement, Mr.Vijayan welcomed the Supreme Court’s quashing of the interim order of the High Court imposing administrator rule in the Waqf Board. However, he said it was worrying that the State government has repeated its position taken in the High Court last week that Section 14 of the new Waqf Act in the Supreme Court too. The amended Act had mandated the inclusion of two non-Muslim members in the Waqf Board, a move against which several pleas are pending in the Supreme Court. The previous LDF government did not include non-Muslim members in the board. In the intervention petition filed in the Supreme Court during the LDF government’s tenure, it also …

‘Deliberate political attack’: MEA rejects Pakistan President’s remarks on minority rights in India

India on Saturday strongly rejected comments made by Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on the alleged demolition of Muslim historical sites in the country, saying that he has no locus standi to comment on India’s internal matters. Asif Ali Zardari’s remarks came after the Indian Railways issued a notice to occupants of the Ganj Shaheeda mosque, located near the main entrance of Kashi railway station, asking them to vacate the premises by June 20. (X/The President of Pakistan) The ministry of external affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement that the comments made by Zardari were “particularly absurd given Pakistan’s own abysmal record on human rights”. “India categorically rejects the unwarranted comments made by the President of Pakistan. He has, in any case, no locus standi to comment on matters that are internal to India. These comments are particularly absurd given Pakistan’s own abysmal record on human rights, which is a matter of global commentary. Pakistan’s long history of systematically targeting and victimising minorities across various faiths is notorious,” Jaiswal said in the statement. …

BJP minority panel chief urges Muslims not to slaughter cow on Bakrid | India News

3 min readNew DelhiUpdated: May 24, 2026 10:42 PM IST Issuing an appeal to ensure the peaceful observance of Eid-al-Adha this week, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s minority morcha on Sunday urged Muslims to avoid community animal sacrifices and especially that of large species, keeping religious harmony in mind. BJP national minority morcha president Jamal Siddiqui said that as per Islam, ‘qurbani’ or sacrifice of animals on Bakrid is considered ‘wajib’ or required and not ‘fard’ or strictly mandatory. He further appealed to the community to protect cows during the festival. “Bakrid is the festival of renunciation and sacrifice, it should be observed with mutual love and harmony. I urge all Muslim brethren not to sacrifice any prohibited animal, and to especially protect the cow which a large section of the people of the country and especially our Hindu brothers consider as a mother,” said Siddiqui, who hails from the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh’s stronghold of Nagpur in Maharashtra. “Our Hindu brothers’ religious feelings are attached to cows, and keeping that in mind, there should be no …

CPI(M)’s support for Vellappally resulted in loss of minority votes, says party’s Idukki district committee

CPI(M)’s support for Vellappally resulted in loss of minority votes, says party’s Idukki district committee

The CPI(M) district committee meeting on Wednesday criticised the State leadership, stating that the party’s support for SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan cost the LDF minority votes in the assembly election. Representatives argued that the leadership’s defence of Mr Natesan and his statements resulted in a total loss of minority support. “The CPI(M) State leadership failed to distance itself from the statements made by Mr Natesan, which signalled to voters that the leadership supported him,” members said. The representatives also pointed out the organisational weaknesses of the CPI(M)’s youth wing, the DYFI. “Over the years, the DYFI has faced a decline in organisational growth and failed to attract the new generation of youth. The organisation failed to arrange diverse programs to engage young people. For the past 10 years, the DYFI’s only consistent activity has been the distribution of pothichoru (food parcels) in hospitals,” representatives said. The CPI(M) Idukki district meeting, convened to review the poll debacle, levelled serious criticism against the CPI(M) State leadership. However, representatives have not yet directed harsh criticism toward …

How Karunanidhi successfully headed a minority government for five years

How Karunanidhi successfully headed a minority government for five years

The situation faced by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) now is no different from what the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), led by late Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, faced in 2006. The TVK, which contested the recent Assembly polls on its own, secured 108 seats (with Mr. Vijay winning in two seats). However, 20 years ago, the DMK, which faced the Assembly elections in alliance with the Indian National Congress, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), won only in 96 seats. However, the DMK formed the government with outside support from its allies, even though the Congress, which won 34 seats repeatedly, exerted pressure on the DMK to accommodate its MLAs in the government. Karunanidhi remained firm in running it as a DMK government because he enjoyed the support of the PMK and the Left parties, whose combined strength was sufficient to cross the halfway mark. But J. Jayalalithaa, then general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and Leader of the Opposition, never …

K’taka clears ₹600 cr for minority areas; BJP alleges ‘appeasement’

BENGALURU: The Karnataka cabinet has cleared a ₹600 crore action plan for the development of minority colonies in the state along with other infrastructure and welfare schemes even as the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused the ruling Congress of indulging in appeasement of “just one minority community”. K’taka clears ₹600 cr for minority areas; BJP alleges ‘appeasement’ The state cabinet, in a meeting on Thursday, announced support for high-speed rail corridors, ₹18,133-crore suburban project around Bengaluru and the scheme to implement development projects in the colonies dominated by the minority community. Leader of opposition in the Karnataka assembly R Ashok on Friday said, “On one hand, the Karnataka government, which has been sitting pretty while making excuses to the Supreme Court that there’s no money to conduct GBA elections, is now plunging into oily minority politics by doling out ₹600 crore just to secure its vote bank. This is nothing but a ploy to appease just one community, not what’s truly in the state’s interest.” He pointed to what he described as gaps in …
