Missiles, drones and cancelled flights: Saudi airport attack raises West Asia tensions | World News

Flights to and from Saudi Arabia’s Abha International Airport were disrupted on Tuesday after Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed a missile and drone attack on the airport, prompting several airlines, including flydubai, Saudia, flynas and Flyadeal, to cancel services. The strike marks a sharp escalation in regional tensions as the US-Iran conflict spills across West Asia. This came at a time when the Iran-US interim peace agreement is seemingly in tatters amid an escalation between the two countries, with both Washington and Iran trading airstrikes and missiles. According to multiple media reports, the airlines cancelled several flights operating to and from Abha after the airport was targeted late on Monday. The aviation disruption came close on the heels of strikes by the United States on Iran early Tuesday, hours after President Donald Trump announced plans to reinstate an American blockade of Iranian ports and levy charges on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded by attacking US allies in the region, effectively collapsing a temporary arrangement aimed at easing hostilities and ensuring safe passage through …

US-Iran war LIVE: Iran, Trump exchange warnings as peace hangs by thread; US president says ‘missiles loaded’

US Iran war LIVE: Trump said the United States would “completely decimate” Iran if it attempted or succeeded in assassinating the sitting president. US-Iran war LIVE: US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he had ordered the military to be ready to launch strikes on Iran if the Iranian government carried out or attempted to assassinate him. The warning came after the funeral of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, where open calls were made for his killing. The “revenge” calls sparked fresh tensions across West Asia as an interim agreement to end the war continues to come under strain amid repeated crossfire in the region. Trump on Iran talks Trump said the US was willing to continue talks with Iran, but declared that the ceasefire between the two countries was over. His administration also moved swiftly to increase pressure on Tehran. “The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue ‘talks.’ We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire …

Modric, missiles and the midfield that won’t grow old

5 min readJun 17, 2026 08:00 AM IST “They should be more humble and respect their opponents more.” Luka Modric‘s rebuke had arrived with the relief of vindication. It was directed not at England’s players but at the journalists and pundits who had spent the week calling Croatia tired, the walking dead, a team running on fumes after three successive extra-time matches. In the 109th minute in Moscow, Mario Mandžukić ended the argument. England went home. Eight years later, the cast has barely changed. England and Croatia meet again at a World Cup, this time in the group stage in Dallas rather than a semi-final in Moscow. Modric, yet again, leads an aging Croatian squad. England, meanwhile, are the fourteenth youngest team in the competition. Nowhere is that contrast clearer than in the midfield. Zlatko Dalić has flirted with experiments recently — he fielded three centre-backs in a friendly against Belgium, Croatia lost, and he promptly returned to the safety of a 4-2-3-1. Should familiarity prevail, Thomas Tuchel can expect to face a double pivot …

India will ensure that indigenously developed missiles and weapons systems can be integrated into the 114 Rafale fighters it plans to buy, people familiar with the matter said. Rafale Fighter played a huge role in destroying terrorist camps in Pakistan during Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025. It will do so by insisting on a so-called interface control document (ICD) in the government to government contract on the “buy and make” deal, they added, asking not to be named. The defence ministry is expected to issue the Request For Proposal (RFP) to French jet maker Dassault next month, and contract negotiations will begin after that. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) cleared the deal on February 12. The people cited above said the plan is to “hardwire” ICD into the final contract for the ₹3.25 lakh crore mega deal. ICD is a critical system engineering document that controls and defines all the vital protocols between a system and sub-systems. According to the proposal cleared by DAC, 18 fighters will be delivered in fly away condition from …

India clears procurement of S-400 missiles, 60 transport planes in ₹2.38 lakh cr defence modernisation push| India News

In a major defence acquisition push, India on Friday cleared procurement of a fresh batch of five S-400 missile systems from Russia and 60 medium transport aircraft as well as a few other military platforms at a total cost of ₹2.38 lakh crore to boost combat prowess of the defence forces. Authoritative sources said the approval covers five S-400 units and 60 transport aircraft. (REUTERS File/ Representational) The procurement proposals were approved by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), the defence ministry’s highest decision-making body on military procurement. It was chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. While the defence ministry confirmed that the DAC cleared the procurement of S-400 missile systems and military transport aircraft, it did not specify the exact quantities. However, authoritative sources said the approval covers five S-400 units and 60 transport aircraft. The IAF is procuring the military transport aircraft to replace its aging fleet of Soviet-era AN-32 and IL-76 planes. The top contenders for the multi-billion deal are Lockheed Martin’s C-130 J Super Hercules, Embraer’s KC-390 aircraft, and Airbus Defence and …

Iran’s ground-to-air missiles exact revenge on US F-15, capping deadly streak of downed F-16s, F-35s

Published on Mar 22, 2026 11:39 pm IST Iranian media claims that an “enemy F-15” was shot down near Hormuz Island and has circulated video presented as proof. Iran’s Fars news agency reported that Iran’s Joint Air Defense Headquarters said the aircraft was intercepted and targeted by ground-to-air defences. The location is significant because Hormuz Island sits near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most sensitive military and energy chokepoints in the region. Any credible shootdown there would signal another sharp escalation in the air war over the Gulf.   News / Videos / Iran’s ground-to-air missiles exact revenge on US F-15, capping deadly streak of downed F-16s, F-35s Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, ideas, images, or text presented here. Last Updated:March 16, 2026, 07:18 IST The metropolis faces a test not just of its security infra, but of the idea that has defined it for decades—a sanctuary of stability in one of the most volatile neighbourhoods An alert issued by the UAE Ministry of Interior warning residents of Dubai and Abu Dhabi of a potential Iranian missile strike is displayed on a mobile phone shortly before a missile was intercepted in Dubai. (AFP) For decades, Dubai has sold itself to the world as the Middle East’s ultimate success story—a city built on stability, safety and ambition. A global hub where finance, tourism and aviation meet. A place where expatriates chase opportunity and investors park billions. In a region often associated with turbulence, Dubai has built its reputation on predictability. But the shadow of the Iran conflict is now testing that carefully crafted image. Over the past two weeks, Iran has fired nearly 2,000 drones and missiles towards the UAE, according to officials, with many aimed at Dubai—the Gulf’s financial and tourism capital. For residents …

Missiles and drones strike at the heart of a village in Odisha

Over the past 10 days, mobile phone screens have been glowing in almost every household of Manikapur village day and night. Mothers plead with their sons to return home; wives urge their husbands to stay safe; and sisters, their voices echoing parental concern, ask their brothers not to chase money in the Gulf at the cost of their lives. In nearly all of the 750 households of Manikapur village in Ganjam, a southern Odisha district, families have been turning to video calls whenever they feel the need to check on their loved ones since war broke out between Iran and the United States–Israel alliance in the last week of February. Almost every family in Manikapur has at least one member working in the Gulf. Udayanath Barik, 35, the sarpanch of Manikapur panchayat and himself a veteran of overseas migration, says villagers prefer jobs in Gulf countries because wages are comparatively higher than in India. “As workers gain experience and learn new things, their salaries rise,” he says. There is no estimate of the number of …

Israel claims Iranian missiles scattered banned cluster bomblets over central town of Azor

3 min readMar 7, 2026 07:04 PM IST Israel has accused Iran of using cluster munitions during the ongoing conflict with Israel, raising concerns about the risks such weapons pose to civilians. The Israeli military said the weapons had been launched multiple times since the war began, describing their use against populated areas as a potential violation of international humanitarian law. Military spokesperson Nadav Shoshani said the army was monitoring the situation closely. “They’ve used it multiple times, which is a war crime when it’s directed towards civilians, and we’re tracking that situation,” Shoshani was quoted as saying by media reports.   What exactly are cluster bombs? Cluster bombs are weapons designed to release multiple smaller explosives, known as submunitions or bomblets, over a wide area rather than producing a single explosion. According to reports by the Associated Press, the warhead of a cluster munition opens in mid-air and disperses dozens of smaller explosive devices. These bomblets then fall across a wide radius and detonate on impact. Military experts say the purpose of such weapons …
