Big aspirations for small modular reactor

Big aspirations for small modular reactor

In Union Budget 2025, a Nuclear Energy Mission was launched with an allocation of ₹20,000 crore for research and development (R&D) in small modular reactors (SMRs) that would be capable of resolving many of India’s energy dilemmas and contributing to its energy transition. However, general comprehension of India’s strategy regarding the development and deployment of SMRs is limited. This brief identifies India’s needs for SMRs, analyses the challenges associated with their deployment in the country, and explores prospects for international collaboration. Union Budget (PTI File) In the global nuclear energy sector, small modular reactors (SMRs) are seen as one of the most promising technologies, for many reasons. They have a power capacity of up to 300 megawatts electrical (MWe) per unit, approximately one-third of the generating capacity of conventional reactors. Owing to their modular design, they can be assembled in factories and then transported to installation sites, ensuring reduced construction times and costs. In the long term, this modularity will allow for economies of serial production and scaled deployment as energy demand increases. SMRs occupy …

The keyboard of choice for modular synth nerds gets a proper sequel after 10 years

The keyboard of choice for modular synth nerds gets a proper sequel after 10 years

If you’ve ever watched a synth video on YouTube, there’s a decent chance you’ve seen the Arturia KeyStep at some point. The affordable keyboard and controller has been a steady presence since its release in January of 2016, especially in DAWless circles. Now Arturia is finally releasing a proper successor, the KeyStep mk2, and on paper, it seems like a big upgrade. The core of what makes the KeyStep beloved remains unchanged: 32 solid minikeys with aftertouch, a small footprint, decent connectivity options, and low price. The mk2 features USB-C for power and MIDI, five-pin MIDI in and out ports, analog sync in and out, a sustain / expression pedal input, plus CV and gate outputs for hooking up modular gear. The headlining updates here are the new generative capabilities, Mutate and Spice, borrowed from the company’s Freak line of synths. Mutate makes semi-random changes to an arpeggio or sequence, endlessly iterating on ideas. And if you find something you like, you can save it as a new sequence. With this ability to create happy …

Nothing’s second modular phone reinvents the rules

Nothing’s second modular phone reinvents the rules

Nothing has announced the second phone under its colorful subbrand CMF: the Phone 2 Pro. Just like the first CMF phone, this is a modular handset with extra accessories you can screw into place. And also just like the first CMF phone, it’s not getting an official US release. Buy the Phone 2 Pro by itself and you get a surprisingly well-specced budget Android handset, with a decent triple rear camera system, a bright 120Hz OLED screen, and 128GB of storage. But the real appeal is the array of modular add-ons: a screw-on case, a kickstand-card wallet combo, a bright orange lanyard, and a pair of swappable camera lenses. This is as disassembled as the Phone 2 Pro gets without dedicated tools. The lanyard is the only accessory that attaches directly to the phone. The extra lenses pop on and off without much work. This BB-8 orange card wallet doubles as a kickstand. Nothing has changed its approach a little since the Phone 1. While owners of that phone could remove its backplate to attach …

Sudesh Lehri, who once sold vegetables for a living, shows off ‘ameeri’ in tour of Mumbai apartment with home theatre, modular kitchen, spectacular views | Bollywood News

Sudesh Lehri’s rags-to-riches story is the stuff of legend. The actor-comedian, who once used to work at tea stalls, factories, and made footwear for a living, now owns a luxury apartment in Mumbai. His property includes three bedrooms, one huge dining room, a modular kitchen, a private studio, home theatre, as well as a huge living room. Sudesh Lehri recently gave a tour of his house to Pinkvilla, where he said that he and his family designed the home themselves. “We didn’t hire an interior designer, because they are expensive,” joked the actor. With a laugh, he said that he’d like to show off his ‘ameeri’ by giving fans a glimpse of the spectacular views of the Mumbai skyline that he can enjoy from his house. Sudesh Lehri began his house tour in his living room, which is decorated with handpicked furniture and wallpaper. He then showed his home theatre, and joked that he enjoys watching his own movies, especially Salman Khan-starrer Ready. His house is mostly done in shades of blue, white and gold. …

Govt sets up new nuclear mission, Rs 20k crore for small modular reactors R&D | India News

In one of the biggest moves to expand nuclear energy sector, the government on Saturday set up a new mission to develop small modular nuclear reactors, and set a target of operationalising at least five such reactors in the next eight years. In her budget speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also promised to amend the Atomic Energy Act and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act to accelerate private sector participation in building and operating nuclear power plants. Sitharaman had expressed such an intention in last year’s budget itself, but she had not revealed the details of the government’s plan on nuclear power generation. Her announcements this year are more substantial and concrete. Story continues below this ad She said the government would set up a Nuclear Energy Mission worth ₹20,000 crore for research and development of small modular reactors (SMRs), and promised that at least five such indigenously developed SMRs would be operationalised by 2033. SMRs, as the name suggests, are small nuclear reactors that typically produce less than 300 MW of electricity. Conventional …

Intel still dreams of modular PCs — it brought a tablet laptop gaming handheld to CES

Intel still dreams of modular PCs — it brought a tablet laptop gaming handheld to CES

At CES 2025, Intel let journalists into its private “Innovation Showcase,” where we saw things like prototype next-gen laptops and giant stereo 3D handheld gaming PCs. While I was there, I also spotted a heavy metal handheld on a table that didn’t seem fully… attached to its screen. When I lifted the screen, it came away easily. It felt suspiciously light to be a rea tablet, so I flipped it over and saw three connectors underneath: Above it, on a shelf, was a laptop with a suspiciously sized chunk of plastic on the bottom that looked like a perfect match. A minute later, Intel gaming evangelist Colin Helms confirmed I was looking at a prototype modular PC. That module contains a complete Intel Lunar Lake computer, the entire guts of a PC. It’s basically a reboot of Intel’s abandoned Compute Card idea, except it’s not all Intel’s doing and you shouldn’t ever expect it to ship. It’s a concept from Quanta, a company whose name you don’t typically see on the laptops and tablets they …

The Framework Laptop 16 just got a modular gadget that enables quadruple SSDs

The Framework Laptop 16 just got a modular gadget that enables quadruple SSDs

The most ambitious laptop ever made just got a long-promised modular upgrade. Starting today, you can pay $39 to add two extra M.2 slots to the Framework Laptop 16 — letting you potentially carry around an AI accelerator, an eGPU adapter, or a grand total of four solid state storage sticks for ludicrous capacity. As Framework’s blog post points out, the new “Dual M.2 Adapter” is Framework’s first new modular component since launch that takes advantage of the Laptop 16’s big expansion bay around back. At launch, you only had two options: a Radeon RX 7700S discrete graphics card for extra money, or a mostly empty bay that only contained fans. But now, you can add the Dual M.2 Adapter to that mostly empty bay to fit an additional pair of M.2 2280, 2260, 2240 or 2230 modules, with four lanes of PCIe 4.0 each, on top of the twin SSD slots (M.2 2280 and M.2 2230) that come with the laptop to begin with. With current stick SSD capacities topping out at around 8TB …

Delhi’s AIIMS Trauma Centre gets five state-of-the-art modular operation theatres | Delhi News

The AIIMS Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Center (JPNATC) on Thursday launched five state-of-the-art modular operation theatres (OT), taking the number of operational OTs to 11. The new OTs, having an area of 58-72 sq m, are spacious enough to conduct surgeries related to organ retrievals, AIIMS JPNATC chief Dr Kamran Farooque said. The OTs are fully integrated and live surgery can be transmitted to demo room lecture theatres or anywhere in the world. “These OTs have a laminar flow AC system to minimise infection. The walls and floors are seamless… with no accumulation of dust or microbials,” Dr Farooque added. Till now, there were six OTs in the trauma centre. “We have acute care centres where OTs run 24X7 and 365 days,” said Dr Farooque.“Patients had to wait in the hospital for a couple of days before they got their OT slot. So, the modular OTs are going to double our strength and output… We will be able to operate upon 2,000 to 2,200 patients per month,” he said. He added that at present, …
