The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a nationwide weather alert warning of torrential rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds across several states on Monday as the southwest monsoon remains active over large parts of the country. According to the latest IMD bulletin, the next 14 hours are expected to be particularly critical, with heavy rain and severe weather likely to affect several regions. IMD warns of heavy rain and strong winds The weather department said wind speeds could reach up to 80 kmph in some areas, increasing the risk of uprooted trees, power outages, traffic disruptions and waterlogging in low-lying areas. The IMD has advised farmers, travellers and people living near rivers and coastal regions to remain vigilant. Residents in hilly states have also been warned about the possibility of landslides and sudden rises in river water levels due to persistent rainfall. Kerala, coasts of Karnataka and Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Pune and nearby areas, have been receiving steady and heavy spells of rain since the past 2-3 days. Low-lying areas in these cities witnessed flooding. Ghats of Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan reported over 200mm of rain on Friday. Parts of Saurashtra on Friday received 570mm of rain in 24 hours, submerging the area. In addition to the low pressure, an off-shore trough runs between south Gujarat and Karnataka. Monsoon forecast cut to 90 per cent, IMD warns of below-normal rainfall

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that India is likely to receive below-normal rainfall during the 2026 monsoon season. Overall rainfall between June and September is expected to be around 90 per cent of the usual average, with a possible variation of 4 per cent. This is lower than the earlier estimate of 92 per cent issued in April and is also the lowest pre-monsoon forecast released by the IMD in recent years. According to the weather department, there is a 60 per cent probability that rainfall this year will fall in the “deficient” category, which refers to rainfall below 90 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA). The IMD, however, clarified that it does not officially declare drought conditions and only classifies rainfall levels. India on Tuesday commissioned the atmospheric testbed facility near Bhopal. The testbed, works of which began in early 2018, is equipped with high-end instruments to record several vital parameters that will be fed into improving the weather models besides facilitating advanced studies on the Indian monsoons. Kiren Rijiju, Minister, Earth Sciences, on Tuesday virtually inaugurated the first phase of the Atmospheric Research Testbed in Central India (ART-CI) in Sehore district, located about 50km northwest of  Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. He also inaugurated  the Coastal Research Laboratory (CRL) established in Visakhapatnam’s Dolphin’s Nose area. Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) is spearheading the research activities at this first-of-its-kind testbed facility built at a cost of Rs 125 crore, whereas Chennai-based National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR) will host and co-ordinate activities at CRL.
