Student residents at Jagannath Shankarsheth boys’ hostel run by Mumbai University are facing health hazards as gutters at the back of this hostel-building located in Churchgate are clogged and an underground drainage pipeline has burst, causing all the drain water from the hostel to accumulate on the ground at the hostel. The unhygienic conditions, students complain, have led to a few of them even falling sick. Mumbai University has meanwhile, started repair works. Students complain that the issue has persisted for over two weeks now. “The drain water leaks out of the gutters and starts accumulating on the ground in the morning around 10-11 am. The water then starts seeping into the ground within a few hours. But the contents coming out of the gutter with drain water remain on the ground,” said one of the students, adding that the entire process leads to continuous foul smell on the premises throughout the day.
