Student residents at Jagannath Shankarsheth boys’ hostel run by Mumbai University are facing health hazards as gutters at the back of this hostel-building located in Churchgate are clogged and an underground drainage pipeline has burst, causing all the drain water from the hostel to accumulate on the ground at the hostel. The unhygienic conditions, students complain, have led to a few of them even falling sick. Mumbai University has meanwhile, started repair works.
Students complain that the issue has persisted for over two weeks now. “The drain water leaks out of the gutters and starts accumulating on the ground in the morning around 10-11 am. The water then starts seeping into the ground within a few hours. But the contents coming out of the gutter with drain water remain on the ground,” said one of the students, adding that the entire process leads to continuous foul smell on the premises throughout the day.

“Additionally this accumulated water has resulted in the creation of a mosquito-breeding ground. Few of us have fallen ill due to this persisting unhygienic condition,” said another student, adding that they have approached Yuva Sena, youth wing of Shiv Sena (UBT) after the issue remained unresolved for some time.
Member of Yuva Sena, Pradeep Sawant, who is also a Mumbai University Senate member, said, “This is really shameful that students of Mumbai University are living in these conditions. The gutters are clogged for many days which clearly shows that varsity administration has not paid heed to concerns raised by students.”
Refuting the allegations, Mumbai University administration in a written response, stated, “As the issue continues for a few days, varsity has commissioned cleaning of gutters. But during the process it is now found that the underground drainage pipeline is damaged. Repair work has now started on priority and within a few days the issue will be resolved.”
