Flooded Indrayani River cuts off Alandi; Warkaris asked to halt pilgrimage

Heavy monsoon rain has caused the Indrayani River to overflow, cutting off access to Alandi in Pune district in Maharashtra after all four bridges leading into the temple town were submerged, reported the PTI. The Pune district administration has appealed to Warkaris and other devotees not to travel to Alandi until the flood situation improves. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for Pune on Monday, officials warned that travelling to Alandi is currently unsafe. In a public advisory, the administration urged devotees who had already started their journey to stop at their present locations instead of attempting to enter the town, the news agency reported. The officials also asked people not to believe rumours and to rely only on official updates issued by the district administration, police and disaster management authorities. The rise in river levels comes after intense rainfall in several regions, increasing water flow in rivers and other water bodies. Authorities are monitoring the situation as heavy rainfall continues across Maharashtra. A day after reeling under the wettest September day since 2020, Mumbai woke up to yet another day of heavy showers on Friday morning, which took the city’s seasonal rainfall quota beyond the 3,000mm mark. While torrential downpour continued to lash Mumbai—prompting the IMD to sound a yellow alert in the city as well as the neighbouring districts, meteorologists have indicated that the intensity is slated to reduce over the weekend. Data furnished by the weather department showed that the Santacruz station received 74mm rain between Thursday and Friday morning while the coastal observatory at Colaba recorded 43mm during the same period. In the last 24 hours ending at 8am on Friday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) automatic weather stations (AWS) also recorded an average of 74.46mm rain in the western suburbs, 49.07mm in the eastern suburbs, and 22.93 mm in the island city. Mumbai rains: In the aftermath of heavy rains in Mumbai on Wednesday (September 25), a 45-year-old lady drowned in an open drain in the MIDC area of Andheri. The incident occurred at around 9:20 pm near gate number 8 of MIDC, Andheri East, BMC officials said. The victim was identified as Vimal Anil Gaikwad. BMC officials said, “A 45-year-old lady Vimal Gaikwad drowned in an open drain in the MIDC area of Andheri. She was rescued by the Mumbai fire brigade and sent to Cooper Hospital but was declared brought dead by doctors.” Local police and the fire brigade were alerted and they took the woman to the Cooper Hospital where she was declared brought dead, they said. While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast above normal rainfall in September for the country, Mumbai registered a shortfall of over 30 percent from its average rain for the month of August. While the city clocks an average of 566 mm in the month, Mumbai only received 379 mm of the average quantum in August, this year. Indicating that the ongoing dry spell is here to stay for now, the IMD has forecast light to moderate showers, with some thunderstorm activity, in Mumbai and Thane between Monday and Thursday. In light of heavy rain battering the city in July when Mumbai recorded a surplus of nearly 50 percent, the city surpassed its seasonal average quota of rainfall on August 24. While the city receives a seasonal average rainfall of 2,319 mm spanning the four monsoon months, the Santacruz observatory has recorded 2432 mm rain so far. However, of this total quantum, Mumbai’s Santacruz station recorded only 379 mm rain in August this year, failing to surpass its monthly average rain quota of 566 mm. …
