Continuous heavy rainfall across parts of Maharashtra has led to a sharp rise in the water level of the Pawana River, causing water to enter the premises of the Morya Gosavi Ganpati Temple in Pimpri-Chinchwad on Monday.
The rise in river levels comes after intense rainfall in several regions, increasing water flow in rivers and other water bodies. Authorities are monitoring the situation as heavy rainfall continues across Maharashtra.
Residents living near rivers and low-lying areas have been advised to remain cautious and follow instructions issued by local authorities.
IMD issues red alert for several Maharashtra districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts, warning of intense rainfall at isolated locations.
According to the weather department, heavy rain spells accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph are likely in some areas.
Several parts of the state have recorded extremely heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours. As per rainfall data, Lonavla recorded 670 mm of rain, while Bhira received 609 mm.
Other locations that witnessed heavy rainfall include Tamini with 580 mm, Shirgaon with 540 mm, Ambona with 537 mm and Khopoli with 516 mm.
Significant rainfall was also recorded in Lonavla with 495 mm, Davdi with 474 mm, Dongerwadi with 451 mm and Walwhan with 442 mm, contributing to increased water levels in local rivers and reservoirs.
Pune schools closed amid heavy rain warning
Following the IMD’s red alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall, the Pune district administration declared a holiday for all schools on Monday as a precautionary measure.
The Pune Municipal Corporation also appealed to citizens to avoid stepping out unless necessary and stay away from rivers, streams and other risky locations.
Authorities have urged residents to follow official updates and safety instructions as rainfall activity continues.
Landslides disrupt Mumbai-Pune connectivity
The heavy downpour also triggered landslides in the Mumbai-Pune ghat section on Monday, affecting both railway and road connectivity between the two cities.
Several train services were cancelled or diverted after boulders fell on railway tracks. Traffic movement on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the old Mumbai-Pune Highway was also affected following landslides.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed the situation and said restoration work was underway despite continuous rainfall.

Road traffic was severely affected after a landslide occurred on the Missing Link section of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near the Khandala exit.
The Mumbai-bound lane was completely closed following the incident. Officials said no casualties were reported based on preliminary information.
Authorities said efforts are underway to clear debris and restore connectivity while teams continue to monitor vulnerable areas amid ongoing rainfall.
