On Saturday, mercury levels in Mumbai soared to 36.2 degree Celsius leaving citizens reeling under high temperatures, which was five degrees above normal. Attributing the unusually high temperatures to western disturbances (WD) in Jammu and Kashmir, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that temperatures are slated to drop starting February 6. Indicating a rise by five degrees above normal, on Saturday, IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 36.2 degrees Celsius while the Colaba coastal observatory registered 34.9 degrees Celsius. Minimum temperatures also hovered three degrees above normal with the Santacruz station recording 21 degrees on Saturday. Speaking to The Indian Express, Sunil Kamble, director of IMD Mumbai, said, “Temperatures in the city have increased because of WD in Jammu and Kashmir, as at such a time, the northerlies —which are responsible for lowering temperatures—do not flow in the city. Once the WDs clear up, the northerlies will flow in.
