Bombay HC resumes trial of Abu Jundal, key accused in 26/11 terror attacks case

The long-stalled trial of Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal, who taught Hindi and local mannerisms to the 10 terrorists involved in the horrific 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, is set to finally resume as the Bombay High Court on Monday quashed a lower court order asking authorities hand over confidential documents to the accused. In 2018, the trial court had directed authorities to furnish the documents sought by Ansari prompting the authorities to approach the Bombay High Court seeking a stay on the order. New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA), which has extradited Pakistani-Canadian businessman Tahawwur Rana in its custody, may collect the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks accused’s voice sample to corroborate call records. Matching the voice sample with Rana’s call record can ascertain if he was talking on the phone while giving instructions regarding the November 2008 attacks that claimed 166 lives in Mumbai. To take the voice sample, Rana’s consent will be required. In the event that he refuses, the NIA can apply for permission for the same in a court. Refusal to submit the sample will be mentioned in the chargesheet, which may spell trouble for him in the trial phase. One permission is granted, Central Forensic Science Laboratory experts will come to the NIA headquarters and take these samples in a noise-free room. The anti-terror agency had produced Rana before the NIA Special Court at Patiala House after formally placing him under arrest on his arrival at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport on Thursday evening, following his successful extradition from the U.S. The court on Friday sent Rana to 18-day NIA custody, following which he was brought from Patiala House courts complex to the NIA headquarters in a heavily-secured motorcade comprising Delhi Police’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and other security personnel. Headley conducted a recce of Mumbai before the attacks by posing as an employee of Rana’s immigration consultancy. MUMBAI: Fahim Arshad Mohammad Yusuf Ansari, one of the two accused to be acquitted in the 26/11 terror attacks case, has filed a petition in the Bombay high court, seeking a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) which will enable him work as a commercial autorickshaw driver. The move is to prevent a repeat of a terrorist act like 26/11. (HT File Photo) According to his petition, Fahim’s plea for the PCC was rejected by Mumbai police on grounds of his alleged link with Pakistani terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
