The first merit list of undergraduate (UG) degree courses was declared by colleges affiliated to Mumbai University on Tuesday. This year, many courses have seen a considerable dip in cut-off scores, especially traditional degree courses such as BA, BCom and BSc. City colleges have seen increased interest for new-age professional courses launched recently. At St. Xavier’s College, which is among the most popular for Arts, the first merit list cut-off for this year is 90 per cent which is a considerable drop from last year’s 92.33 percent. A similar situation has occurred at Ramnarain ruia College too, where the cut-off score for the first merit list of Arts has dropped from 92 per cent to 90 percent. Ruia College has seen a drop in cut-off score in B.Sc as well as in Biochemistry, whereas cut-off for Biotechnology has increased from 92.2 per cent to 94.6 per cent. The University of Mumbai has extended the last date to register for admission to various undergraduate (UG) degree courses in affiliated and autonomous colleges in the state. Earlier set to close on May 23, now the Mumbai University application window for admission to UG programmes will close on May 26. Candidates can register and apply online at mu.ac.in/admission.  There are over three lakh seats up for offer in Mumbai University’s affiliated and autonomous colleges for various UG courses including in UG academic programmes – three years UG programmes, four years hons/hons with research, five years integrated UG, PG programmes. (Representational) Mumbai: In a major embarrassment, Mumbai University has issued graduation certificates with the name of the metropolis misspelt as ‘Mumabai’. In 2023-24, a total of 1.64 lakh students graduated, though it is not clear as of now how many got certificates which had “University of Mumabai” printed on them. “Due to a printing error, some certificates had this typo. We are rectifying it,” a University of Mumbai official told PTI on Saturday. Fresh certificates will be issued at no extra cost, the official added. Students of third year law at Mumbai University appearing for an exam under the old pattern on Labour Law got a rude shock on Wednesday after they received question papers under the new pattern. Half an hour into the exam, the question papers were replaced with the corrected ones and colleges were instructed to allow adequate extra-time to complete the paper. The new pattern differs from the old one in both format and marking scheme. While the old pattern is a 60-mark question paper, the new one comprises questions of 75 marks. The error came to light when a few students noticed the discrepancy. The university acted promptly by sending the correct question papers to all exam centres via email and instructed them to provide additional time to compensate for the disruption. According to many of them, the damage was already done. A professor from a college in Mumbai, said, “Once the error was pointed out, the university replaced the paper immediately and provided extra time. Around 200 engineering students of Mumbai University held a protest at its Kalina campus Thursday demanding special carry-on facility with their uncleared papers so that they do not miss an entire academic year. According to protesting students, all of them are part of close to 2,500 engineering students who have to take a drop from academics because they have failed to clear their “Golden KT” paper, the last chance to pass all papers from first and second year of the four-year course to proceed to third and fourth year. Students complain that they failed because of delayed academic years due to Covid-19 pandemic impact and it will be injustice if they are forced to take a drop because of it. For every academic year, students are Allowed To Keep Term (ATKT) with a maximum of two unclear papers. Student residents at Jagannath Shankarsheth boys’ hostel run by Mumbai University are facing health hazards as gutters at the back of this hostel-building located in Churchgate are clogged and an underground drainage pipeline has burst, causing all the drain water from the hostel to accumulate on the ground at the hostel. The unhygienic conditions, students complain, have led to a few of them even falling sick. Mumbai University has meanwhile, started repair works. Students complain that the issue has persisted for over two weeks now. “The drain water leaks out of the gutters and starts accumulating on the ground in the morning around 10-11 am. The water then starts seeping into the ground within a few hours. But the contents coming out of the gutter with drain water remain on the ground,” said one of the students, adding that the entire process leads to continuous foul smell on the premises throughout the day. MU to set up centre to study Parsi-Zorostrian culture | Mumbai News

The Mumbai University (MU) has decided to establish Avesta Pahlavi Study Centre to study the Parsi —Zorostrian culture. The university signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs in this regard on Thursday. The study centre, which is scheduled to commence from this academic year, will operate through the School of Languages of the university. The university has received a financial support of around Rs 12 crore from the Union Ministry, which will fund the creation of a language lab, multimedia studio and ancillary infrastructure. The centre aims to preserve and protect the Avesta-Pahlavi legacy, study Parsi-Zoroastrian culture, explore Parsi community’s contribution to India’s development, document linguistics features for posterity and understand Avesta-Pahlavi’s contribution to India’s cultural diversity. Along with certificate and diploma level courses, the university plans to offer Master’s and PhD courses too in Avesta-Pahlavi Studies.
