The National Human Rights Commission of India has asked the Union government to “review” laws to “ensure gender inclusivity”, including the most recent amendments to the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act. The NHRC noted that the amendments removing transgender people’s right to a “self-perceived gender identity” had caused concern among community members, adding, “It may be appropriate for the authorities to consider revisiting these concerns.” It has also recommended that the population enumeration phase of the ongoing Census 2027 exercise should include distinct categories for “intersex”, “transmen”, and “transwomen”, so that accurate disaggregated data can be gathered and maintained. A 27-year-old Army jawan from Gujarat was killed onboard the Jammu Tawi–Sabarmati Express earlier this week after he allegedly got into an argument with train attendants. The incident took place on Jammu Tawi–Sabarmati Express earlier this week.(Image for representation) The incident took place when the train was passing through Rajasthan’s Bikaner district on Sunday night. The victim has been identified as Jigar Kumar Chaudhary, who was returning home to Gujarat during vacation after a field posting. While some media reports stated that the Chaudhary had an argument with train attendants over seating arrangements, other reports said that the dispute arose over blankets and sheets. According to officials, the argument escalated and one of the attendants, identified as Zubair Memon, reportedly attacked him with a knife, according to MoneyControl. After the train reached Bikaner, the Army Jawan was taken to Prince Bijay Singh Memorial (PBM) Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday (September 9, 2024) emphasized that safety and social audits of cities and institutions should be carried out to get a better idea about the lags and issues that currently exist in terms of ensuring women’s safety in India. The Commission also said that better implementation of laws is needed to make sure that policies translate into tangible outcomes to improve the safety of women both at home, and outside. The remarks about women safety were made during the national symposium on Women’s Safety at Work & Public Spaces organized by the NHRC in Delhi. Acting Chairperson of NHRC, Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, who chaired the symposium said that there have been a lot of efforts in terms of the legal provisions and policies for women’s empowerment in the country. After West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said a new law should be enacted against rape and murder, the state legislative assembly started preparing for a special session to do so on next Monday and Tuesday. While this comes in the wake of protests against the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical Hospital, the details of the proposed bill are not yet clear. A senior official of the state government said, “We already have one law against rape and murder which also has a provision for capital punishment. We are trying to bring a separate law which will only have provisions for capital punishment. And all rape cases should be trialled in a fast track court.
