Filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia on new-age cinema trend: ‘Unnecessary gore, demon-like looks, hyper-musculine anti-heroes’

Filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia has major problems with the violence, bloodshed, hyper-musculinity and rough anti-hero looks of actors in most action-packed films today. Calling out heroes wearing demon-like looks in superhit films, he is surprised that they are doing well at the box office. Tigmanshu Dhulia at Koshala Literature Festival held in Lucknow “The problem with today’s films, which are being made in abundance and are being loved by the audience, is with the angry characters! These KGFs, Kantaras and all show too much violence and bloodshed. This maar-kaat started with Baahubali (2015) and is just growing,” says Tigmanshu. He adds, “Bematlab ki maar-kaat rahe hain, khoon baha rahe hain! And, in a series, such films are coming and are being liked by the audience.” Trying to decode their appeal, he says, “Probably, there is an anger in society and people are not able to vent it out, so they are maybe connecting with these films and liking them. I don’t understand the DNA of such films, but personally, I don’t like it at all.” The filmmaker …

Tastefully Yours first impression: Weirdly addictive duo Go Min Si, Kang Ha Neul cook up quirky kitchen romance in Netflix’s new-age Business Proposal | Web-series News

Safe to say, Go Min Si and Kang Ha Neul are Netflix’s new Shin Ha Ri and Kang Tae Moo—just flip the personalities. Tastefully Yours dropped on May 13 with a nonexistent Rotten Tomatoes score, and it’s tough watching a Squid Game star’s much-hyped show pull in below-average ratings at home. But let’s not forget the new K-drama pattern: tanking locally, trending globally, Tastefully Yours seems to be riding that same wave. Early Netflix buzz hints it’s gaining traction, but we will have to wait until the next Tudum top 10 non-English TV list is released. For now, Weak Hero, Resident Playbook and Heavenly Ever After are dominating the genre for consecutive weeks.   Tastefully Yours:  Go Min Si, Kang Ha Neul’s new rom-com Tastefully Yours episode one and two premiered by introducing us to Han Beom Woo (Kang Ha Neul), a money-hungry chaebol battling his brother Han Sun Woo (Bae Na Ra) in the classic K-drama family feud, both gunning for the CEO seat of their mega food empire, currently run by their mother who’s …

While 2023 was a blockbuster year for Hindi and Pan-Indian films, 2024 was painful and surprising for Bollywood. While several ambitious projects flopped at the box office, rooted small-town stories won the audience. Amid all this, Bollywood actresses Deepika Padukone and Shraddha Kapoor became the reigning queens of the box office this year. With three releases, DP is at the first spot, at the same time with just one release, Stree 2, Shraddha is at the second spot. However, amongst several experienced actresses, a new-age actor took the third spot and no! It is not Janhvi Kapoor.  Who is in the third spot? Laila Majnu, Bulbul and Qala fame actor Triptii Dimri stepped into the commercial business after several critically acclaimed films with Ranbir Kapoor‘s Animal. The actor, who was seen as a cop, Vamika, in the web show Gyaarah Gyaarah recently, emphasises how digital platforms are reshaping the creative process and allowing for more daring narratives. “OTT platforms have opened up new doors for storytelling in India. It’s the perfect place to prioritise stories above anything else — the star cast, the budget, the presenter, the number of screens, etc. That’s why OTT is a democratic platform for new-age stories to be told in the most authentic way, with a cast that is genuinely suited with the length that does justice to a story,” says the actor. Shabana Azmi on new-age actors having large entourage: I used to have a three-member team, travel in buses

Rising costs of film shoots have often come under the scanner with several filmmakers lamenting that actors need to be more considerate in terms of the fee they charge as well as the large entourage that accompany them everywhere. “I find it astonishing that producers pick up these crazy tabs,” says veteran actor Shabana Azmi, comparing the scenario with the West where the producers have control over who is required in the crew. Sanju Samson beyond the sixes: Social media star, boy-next door, new-age mass hero | Ipl News

Hours after the selectors picked him, he posted a greyscale photograph of himself staring into the distance, his eyes still and solemn, and beneath it wrote: “Viyarppu thunniyitta kuppayam”. Literally translated as a shirt spun with sweat. The inference is as clear as sun-light, and situationally apt, that he had to shed considerable sweat to earn his place in the side. But the line tells you more than just about Sanju’s cricketing graph, but his organic yet carefully-woven cult-persona on social media platforms that extends beyond those that love him just for his cricketing gifts, the identity he has carved as a boy-next-door cricketer-celebrity in the Insta-scape, his proximity to the prevailing pop culture of the state, his love for music and movies. He is delivering a cricketing statement; yet it conveys more than that. To understand further, listen to the background score that goes with the picture and the line. The one-liner is the opening line of a hip-hop chart-busting song Kuthanthram (literally means deceit), a collaboration of composer Sushin Shyam with rapper Vedan, for …

Belting sixes from the outset, new-age leftie Abhishek Sharma makes an impact at the top | Ipl News

Abhishek Sharma has faced just 132 balls in eight innings this IPL season. That is just 16 and a half balls every game. It is not a wow stat. Except when you consider that he has smeared every fifth ball (5.07) over the fence, often landing in the stands. It indeed is a wow stat, because it’s six-hitting frequency that betters the best six-hitters in this business. The most ferocious six-striker of our times, the semi-retired Chris Gayle, smacked one every nine-and-a-half balls he faced in T20s; the Indian maharaja of maximums, Rohit Sharma buried one every 16th ball. Certainly, their careers span almost as long as Abhishek’s age (23). They have traversed the breadth of this world, tamed varied climes and bowlers. Abhishek is in the nascence of his career, yet to feature in one full season of the league, and four short of 100 T20 games. Gayle has played 10 times more than him; Rohit five-fold. Abhishek might or might not scale such lofty peaks. Before that he would have to maintain this …

Virat Kohli, India and cricket are being muscled out of T20 by new-age big-hitters | Ipl News

There was a time when Virat Kohli was the proud owner of that rare all-format batting template. Tests to ODI to T20 and back – he would change his jersey and gears but he was always Kohli. A child of the 90s, he had seen Sachin Tendulkar for far too long to give up on correctness. The celebrated Australian cricket writer Gideon Haigh would sum up Kohli’s commitment to cricket’s ethos with an iconic line: “Much as the marketers would love to take cricket out of T20, Kohli keeps putting it back in.” Finally, it seems Kohli’s long resistance is waning. This isn’t about the batting great’s deficiencies as a T20 batsman, more about cricket’s slow walk towards the exit in the game’s shortest format. A proof of these tumultuous transitional times is this puzzling contraction that is floating around this IPL. Despite being the highest run-getter for the first-half of season’s IPL, questions are being asked about Kohli’s place in the Indian side for the World T20. For most of this month a bunch …
