After ‘Act of God’ stance, NHAI agrees to pay Shimla orchard owner for landslide damage | Chandigarh News

“It was a day exactly like today’s… The sun was bright, though not too hot,” says Narinder Singh Rathore, talking about May 25, 2025. His two granddaughters sat in the verandah of their pucca house as his wife put out to dry freshly washed linen from the small homestay they ran. “Suddenly, crate walls laid by the NHAI in a bid to protect the slope just above our apple orchard started falling. In a few seconds, a cloud of dust had engulfed the entire valley… People far away could see it,” says Rathore. Soon after, he filed a case in the National Green Tribunal (NGT), seeking compensation from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the 440-odd apple trees he said he lost in the landslide. He sought compensation under provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, alleging large-scale environmental degradation and damage to his agricultural and orchard land. The NHAI, which earlier disputed the damage quoted by Rathore and called the landslide an act of God, has now told the NGT that it would …

Shimla landslide that damaged apple orchards was ‘act of God’, NHAI tells National Green Tribunal | Cities News

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), in its reply before the National Green Tribunal (NGT), on Wednesday termed the landslide in Shimla that allegedly damaged agricultural land and around 550 apple plants worth around Rs 40 lakh in Mashobra last year as an “act of God”. To support its submission, the NHAI placed on record a May 2025 report of the India Meteorological Department, stating that Shimla recorded 104.5 mm rainfall against the normal rainfall of 69.8 mm during the period, reflecting a departure of nearly 50 per cent. The response was filed in a petition moved by orchardist Narender Singh Rathore from the Mashobra block, who moved NGT in 2025, stating that he suffered a huge loss due to the collapse of crate walls during NHAI’s construction work. The work was being carried out under the four-lane project in the Shakral Village-Dhalli section of the Kaithlighat-Dhalli stretch of National Highway-5 (NH-5). Rathore approached the NGT under provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, alleging large-scale environmental degradation and damage to his agricultural and orchard …

Shimla orchardist suffered Rs 40 lakh loss due to NH-5 four-lane work

An apple orchardist in Mashobra block of Shimla district has suffered losses amounting to nearly Rs 40 lakh after repeated collapse of crate walls during the ongoing four-lane project on the Kaithlighat-Dhalli section of National Highway-5 allegedly damaged his orchard land and around 550 fruit-bearing apple plants, the Himachal Pradesh Horticulture Department informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Tuesday. The disclosure was made during the hearing of a petition filed by orchardist Narender Singh Rathore, who alleged that highway widening work in the ecologically fragile stretch beyond Dhalli town had caused severe environmental degradation, landslides and damage to his orchard land. Two inspections conducted Secretary (Horticulture) C Paulrasu informed the Tribunal that inspections were conducted following complaints regarding damage caused by collapsing crate walls near the construction site. “The first inspection was carried out by the Horticulture Development Officer, Mashobra, on June 10, 2025. The value of the damaged fruit plants was calculated in accordance with the government-approved Harbans Singh Formula,” the report submitted before the Tribunal stated. The first assessment found that 110 …

File | Photo Credit: PTI The West Bengal government gave in-principle approval for handing over seven stretches of national highways to the NHAI and the NHIDCL, paving the way for long-pending infrastructure works on key road corridors in the State. These stretches were under the national highway wing of the State’s Public Works Department (PWD), and the handover proposals had been pending for nearly a year despite repeated requests from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, according to an official statement. The press note issued by the chief secretary’s office on Saturday (May 16, 2026) said: “Development works on these stretches stood stalled in the absence of a formal handover. With today’s clearance, the central agencies can move forward without further delay.” Among the stretches handed over to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) are 329.6 km of NH-312 connecting Jangipur, Omarpur, Krishnagar, Bongaon and Basirhat up to Ghojadanga along the India-Bangladesh border, besides NH-31 from the Bihar-West Bengal border to Gazole, and NH-33 up to Farakka. …

NHAI asks FASTag issuer banks to validate vehicle registration numbers to enhance accuracy| India News

New Delhi: State-owned NHAI on Wednesday said it has issued directions to all FASTag issuer banks to undertake immediate validation of vehicle registration numbers to enhance the accuracy and reliability of data in the electronic toll collection system. People register for FASTag at a Taswade toll plaza on the Pune-Bangalore national highway, in Karad on February 17. (PTI Photo) NHAI, in a statement, said the decision follows receipt of complaints regarding instances where the VRN (vehicle registration number) captured by FASTag readers does not match the actual registration number displayed on the vehicle number plate. Such discrepancies have the potential to undermine enforcement mechanisms and may lead to revenue evasion and also attract other penal provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it added. It has been observed that a considerable number of such mismatches are associated with FASTags issued prior to their issuance with the VAHAN database, the statement said. During that period, validation mechanisms were relatively limited and relied more on manual processes, leading to potential inconsistencies in vehicle identification records, it noted. …

NHAI mandates 100 per cent digital toll payments from April 1

NHAI mandates 100 per cent digital toll payments from April 1

Road users across India will no longer be able to pay toll fees in cash from April 1 as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) shifts to a fully digital payment system. In a major step towards modernising highway travel, NHAI will implement a complete ban on cash payments at toll plazas across the country. From April 1, commuters will have to pay toll charges only through digital modes such as FASTag or UPI. The move is aimed at improving efficiency and bringing more transparency to toll collection on national highways and expressways. Officials believe that a fully digital system will help vehicles pass through toll plazas faster, reducing long queues and saving travel time. With the removal of cash lanes, authorities expect a smoother flow of traffic, especially during peak hours. Faster processing at toll booths is also likely to cut fuel consumption and reduce vehicle emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment. However, the transition may cause inconvenience for some travellers, particularly those who are not prepared for digital payments. Vehicles without a …

NHAI has offered ₹18.41 crore in lieu of the reconstruction and a formal response is awaited,” an official said. Delhi Police did not respond to HT’s request for a comment on the development.
