NWEA: A wildlife association that helped conserve the Nilgiris’ biodiversity

NWEA: A wildlife association that helped conserve the Nilgiris’ biodiversity

With discussions under way to revive one of the oldest conservation associations, the Nilgiri Wildlife And Environment Association (NWEA), conservationists have highlighted the group’s contributions to preserving not just the biodiversity of the Nilgiris, but that of India, through its pioneering efforts in maintaining animal populations in the hills. The NWEA came into existence in colonial India, when British colonists discovered a “hunters’ paradise” in the Nilgiris. According to N. Mohanraj, a Nilgiris-based conservationist and one of the NWEA’s longest-serving members, restrictions on hunting existed in England but they were non-existent in India. “The Nilgiris, soon connected by the railways, became a magnet for European hunters from across the region. Just 65 years after the first Europeans set foot in the Nilgiris, the decline in game numbers became alarming – even among the hunting community,” said Mr. Mohanraj. It was during this distressing observation that General Richard Hamilton, an early advocate for wildlife protection, persistently …

Fire prevention works begin in the Nilgiris forests

Fire prevention works are being undertaken in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. | Photo Credit: SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT Fire prevention initiatives have begun to be implemented in the core and buffer areas of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) in preparation for the summer fire season. This year, officials expect to potentially have to battle more fires due to the intense cold season during the winter leading to much of the undergrowth drying up and contributing to biomass that could fuel fires during the summer season. In preparation, around 300 km of fire lines are being drawn in the core area of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, with 400 km of fire lines also being readied in the buffer zone. A fire line is a break in foliage measuring a few meters wide that can help contain fires and prevent them from spreading quickly through reserve forests. Officials said that around 300 km of fire lines are being drawn in the core area of MTR. The fire lines are between six and 15 meters and are being drawn along …
