A 91-year-old retired colonel from Mansa Devi Complex has become the latest victim of cyber crooks who dupe people by posing as officials of gas distribution companies and trick them into clicking fake, malicious links or downloading files which leak their banking details. A case has been registered under Sections 318 (4) (cheating), 316 (2) (criminal breach of trust), 336 (3)/338/340 (forgery), and 61 (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). (HT File) The tricity has seen at least seven such cases in the last week alone. In the latest instance, the complainant received a call from a man posing as an official of Adani Gas service. The caller allegedly told him that his gas bill had not been generated and asked him to send his meter reading. The caller subsequently sent him a link and asked him to make a payment of ₹12 through an online portal. The complainant was allegedly guided into opening his Paytm wallet and clicking on various details, following which ₹74,992 was debited from his Punjab National Bank account. …

Reviewing the progress of the Amarajeevi Jaladhara mega water grid projects being implemented in the erstwhile East and West Godavari districts, Mr. Pawan Kalyan said the initiative would provide a permanent solution to drinking water problems in the coastal villages. To effectively check soaring retail rice prices as part of the State government’s intervention, the officials have rolled out a subsidised rice distribution programme across Chittoor, Annamayya and Sri Sathya Sai districts. Effective from Saturday (August 1), the initiative is intended to provide quality rice varieties at rates lower than those prevailing in the open market. Officials said it would seek to provide immediate relief to ration card holders grappling with rising household expenses amid sharp increases in retail rice prices. Chittoor district Joint Collector Adarsh Rajendran said the government had established special sale counters at designated supermarkets and Rythu Bazaars in every Assembly constituency to ensure easy access to reasonably priced rice. “We expect that the move will increase competition in the retail market and discourage excessive pricing,” he said. Under the scheme, Super Fine Steam (BPT) rice, which sells for around ₹62 per kilogram in the open market, will be offered at ₹52 per kilogram.
