Origins still debated, but witnessed by all in 1986 World Cup

Origins still debated, but witnessed by all in 1986 World Cup

When you say, in Wave theory lie the underpinnings of Optics, you might in a tiny chance, be talking of Foundational Physics. Mostly, you would be thinking of football though. In June of 2026 with the FIFA World Cup 10 days away, the optics of how the Mexican Wave, came to acquire that name, tend to be resented by Americans who in a show of defiance, call is just the ‘Wave’. The Canadians, expectedly follow. At the heart of this consternation is its provenance – something American football University and franchise cheerleaders, and attendees of the 1984 LA Olympics and even a Vancouver hockey team, bicker over, amongst themselves. The Mexicans simply rose in unison with hands raised, and sat down after a moment of un-self conscious grinning smiles, as the wave moved, and then sat down promptly back in the 1986 World Cup that they hosted solely. Television broadcasts beamed the stadium phenomenon across the world — and the human crest and trough that needed no rehearsals, acquired the gleeful name of a ‘Mexican …

What is the SRH team song, with origins in Melbourne, all about? | Cricket News

3 min readApr 19, 2026 11:15 AM IST Simon Helmot, a key coaching staff with the Sunrisers Hyderabad, grew up in Melbourne and would sing the orange brigade’s team win song with much gusto after SRH defeated arch rivals CSK by 10 runs. Though the Aussie was schooled on SRH socials to improve their fielding levels urgently, though Nitish Reddy, Sakib Hussain, Eshan Malinga and Heinrich Klaasen got the job done against the yellow lions. IPL is quite the zoo, with assorted teams staking claim to the wildlife royals, tigers and lions. But SRH has been on about their tiger, which is now morphed into Hydra, merely for rhyming purposes. ALSO READ | Sakib waited, Malinga pounced — SRH beat CSK by 10 runs in IPL 2026 thriller Having adopted Richmond Footie side’s Tigerland anthem in their dressing room for a few seasons now, 2026 has seen the lyrics retrofitted to suit the cricket league they are playing in. So, ‘Tigerland’ becomes ‘Hydera-bad’. Here’s how the slightly mangled lyrics go: Oh we’re from HyderabadA fighting …

The Smoky Origins of the Newari Choila

The Smoky Origins of the Newari Choila

Newars are the indigenous inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley, living across Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Kathmandu, and the nearby towns like Kirtipur. “In Nepal, chhoila originated from the Newari community,” says Khika Bahadur Gurung, the head chef of Hotel Traditional Comfort, in Kathmandu.  “It is symbolic of celebrations and ceremonial feasts, and an essential component of Samay Baji, a ceremonial food platter. This set is incomplete without chhoila.” Samay Baji is more than a meal. The items on the platter — baji (beaten rice or chiura), aila (a local liquor), wauncha (greens), chhoila, and khen (boiled egg) — represent the five elements: earth, water, fire, air and sky. “Chhoila is the fire element,” says Kabita Raut Maharjan, a home cook from Kirtipur. “It’s a symbol of energy and the life force known as Agni.” The secret of chhoila lies in the masala, which requires spices ground fresh in the kitchen. It begins with the red chillies, which must be dry-roasted or toasted in oil and then ground to a granular consistency. Other essential ingredients include ginger and …

Kerala To Be Renamed ‘Keralam’: Meaning, History And Linguistic Origins | India News

Last Updated:February 24, 2026, 20:47 IST The core of the demand lies in language. In Malayalam, the state has always been called “Keralam”. Historians trace the origins of the name to the ancient Chera dynasty, which ruled much of present-day Kerala. (File photo) The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved the Kerala government’s proposal to rename the state as “Keralam”, backing a long-standing demand to align its official name with its original form in Malayalam. The decision follows resolutions passed twice by the Kerala Legislative Assembly — in August 2023 and June 2024 — urging the Centre to amend the First Schedule of the Constitution and adopt “Keralam” in all languages listed in the Eighth Schedule. The resolutions were moved by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and received unanimous support from both the ruling LDF and the Congress-led UDF opposition. The state government has maintained that the move is not symbolic, but a correction of how the name appears in official records. Senuran Muthusamy – ‘origins in India’, but ‘firmly South African’ | Cricket News

He still has relatives in Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam, but Senuran Muthusamy identifies himself as “firmly South African”, an assessment that would have been reinforced with his maiden Test century against the country of his forefathers. After impressing with both bat and ball during the recent series in Pakistan, Muthusamy’s exploits in the first Test in India’s North-East would have been a dream realised for his father, a cricket fanatic who passed away when his son was just 11, and his mother, a witness to his rise through the ranks on the back of discipline, dedication and devotion to fitness and his craft. It’s said that it takes a village to raise a child. In Muthusamy’s case, it takes a family to raise a cricketer, as his grandmother was the one who gave the youngster throwdowns in the back garden, something the all-rounder described to Durban’s Tabloid Newspaper as his “fondest childhood memory”. This is Muthusamy’s second tour of India and did nothing to catch the eye on the 2019 tour, when he made his debut, …

New Study Uses AI to Reveal Dry Origins of Mars’ Mysterious Slope Streaks

New Study Uses AI to Reveal Dry Origins of Mars’ Mysterious Slope Streaks

The origin of Recurring Slope Linea, the long, dark markings that stretches across the slopes of Martian surface for hundreds of feet, has been a topic of debate for a long time. They appear during warmer season and they were seen as one of the most compelling signs that liquid water might still exist on Mars, suggesting a rare pocket of habitability on an otherwise arid planet. However, this view has been challenged by a new study by a group of researchers Brown University and the University of Bern. Using machine learning and leveraging satellite images, they have found evidence about the dry processes being the origin of these streaks. Machine learning breakthrough brings new evidences According to Adomas Valantinas, a postdoctoral researcher at Brown who coauthored the research with Valentin Bickel, a researcher at Bern, a big focus of Mars research is understanding modern-day processes on Mars, including the possibility of liquid water on the surface. This study reviewed these features but found no evidence of water. Their model favours dry formation processes. Valantinas …

New Study Traces T-Rex’s Origins to Asia and Links Gigantic Size to Climate Shift

New Study Traces T-Rex’s Origins to Asia and Links Gigantic Size to Climate Shift

The origin and evolution of the famous Tyrannosaurus rex have been a topic of fierce debate among the palaeontologists for a long time. A new study led by UCL researchers suggests that T-Rex might have evolved in North America, but its direct ancestors arose and came from Asia when the sea levels fell, providing a land bridge connecting the continents more than 70 million years ago. The study also found that the rapid growth in size of tyrannosaurids as well as a closely related group called megaraptors coincided with a cooling of the global climate following a peak in temperatures 92 million years ago. Evolutionary Origins According to Cassius Morrison, the lead author of the new study, the direct ancestors of the T-Rex reached North America via Bering Strait around 72 million years ago. The new research aligns with a 2016 study that found T-Rex shares more anatomical similarities with Asian tyrannosaurids like Tarbosaurus than with North American ones like Daspletosaurus. The researchers used a model based on where and when various tyrannosaurid species had …

This New Study Claims About The Origins Of Gold

This New Study Claims About The Origins Of Gold

A burst of powerful radiation observed in space has challenged traditional theories about the formation of some of the heavy metals such as gold and platinum. Scientists have discovered that such a flare can produce massive amounts of heavy, rare atoms in seconds, making it a remarkable source of valuable metals. According to a study published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, magnetars, which have existed since before the solar system was formed, could represent an early source of precious metals, such as gold. “If you consider the fundamental components of everything, it’s just neutrons, protons, and electrons,” Anirudh Patel, the study’s lead author, told The Washington Post. Magnetars often emit strong gamma and enormous X-ray flares, which are so intense that they can interfere with satellites on Earth, even if they are thousands of light-years away. A recent analysis of flares indicates that a single event may have produced up to two million billion kilograms of heavy elements. Scientists believe these explosions are caused by “starquakes”, breaking down the magnetar’s surface after its magnetic field …

The Universe’s Brightest Lights Have Surprisingly Dark and Mysterious Origins

Some of the brightest lights in the universe shine from some of its darkest corners — so-called supermassive black holes. Invisible to the human eye, these high-energy powerhouses light up the cosmos with emissions that are detected by space telescopes. Thousands of such light sources have been discovered with NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, which has been observing since 2008. These aren’t just stars — they are active galactic nuclei (AGN) where large gravitational forces fling matter around black holes, creating intense radiation blasts all across the electromagnetic spectrum. Blazars and AGN Jets Reveal How Black Holes Shape and Light Up the Universe As per NASA’s observational data, black holes lurk at the centres of most galaxies and are hundreds of thousands to billions of times the mass of the sun. In AGN, gas and dust fall into an inward-spiralling disk. Second, the disks experience friction and magnetic forces that produce light from radio to gamma rays. About one in ten AGN produce powerful jets of particles that move at nearly the speed of light, and it’s still a mystery to …
