Edappadi Palaniswami seeks compensation for rain-affected farmers in Tamil Nadu’s Cauvery delta region

Palaniswami on Sunday (August 23, 2026) urged the TVK-led Tamil Nadu government to depute officials to ascertain the extent of crop loss incurred by farmers due to the recent rains in the Cauvery delta region and announce compensation. Citing reports that standing crops in about 2,000 acre have been affected due to rains in Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and other districts in the Cauvery delta region, Mr. Palaniswami said livelihood of farmers in this region have been affected. The former Chief Minister urged the State government to depute officials of the Revenue and Agriculture Departments to visit the affected areas and ascertain the extent of crop loss so that compensation could be awarded. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday urged the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government to take up, at the earliest, the implementation of the   Nadanthaai Vaazhi Cauvery project, which is aimed at rejuvenating the Cauvery river and its tributaries and curbing the mix of of sewage with the river system. Criticisng the government for indulging in “bragging” about itself and “horse trading,” besides publishing reels on social media, Mr Palaniswami said the State government did not have to carry out any measure for people and farmers in the Cauvery delta other than reviving the project.   Recalling how he, as Chief Minister in 2019,  had submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi a project proposal, which was estimated to cost  ₹11,250  crore, the AIADMK leader said the Union government cleared the project in 2024 for works to be  executed at a cost of around ₹ 935 crore. Palaniswami on Thursday (June 18, 2026) alleged that the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government had failed to take adequate steps to secure Cauvery water for kuruvai cultivation in the Delta districts, causing hardship to farmers and depriving agricultural labourers of employment opportunities. Palaniswami, who had remained silent until now, has extended his congratulations to the party set to take office.
