Tamil Nadu’s Nitish Kumar or assertive chief? Edappadi Palaniswami confronts a battle of perceptions

Tamil Nadu’s Nitish Kumar or assertive chief? Edappadi Palaniswami confronts a battle of perceptions

Political narratives, if left unchallenged, can tilt the balance in elections. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami appears more cognisant of this than anyone else in the electoral field in Tamil Nadu this election season. Ever since he reluctantly returned to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) last April at the behest of the BJP’s principal poll strategist and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Mr. Palaniswami has been under attack from his rivals, chiefly from the ruling DMK and its allies. Over the past few years, the DMK front has built a strong political narrative projecting the AIADMK leadership as being subservient to the BJP and the Narendra Modi-led Union government. This perception was bolstered by the decision of the erstwhile AIADMK government, under both O. Panneerselvam and Mr. Palaniswami, to embrace certain Central schemes that Jayalalithaa, their predecessor, had strongly opposed during her lifetime. This included the Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY), which Tamil Nadu joined in January 2017, just a month after her death. Poll framed as Tamil Nadu vs Delhi In recent times, …

DMK regime made TN a hub of drug trafficking, claims AIADMK chief Palaniswami| India News

Chennai, AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami has claimed that the current DMK regime has transformed Tamil Nadu into a “hub of drug trafficking” and alleged that people wonder if the state government was protecting the innocent public or “shielding the anti-social elements”. DMK regime made TN a hub of drug trafficking, claims AIADMK chief Palaniswami After M K Stalin took over the reins as Chief Minister in 2021, Tamil Nadu has been turned into a hub of ganja trafficking, illicit liquor sales and drug mafia. “This government has created a situation where there is no place in the state where ganja is not available. To put it bluntly, media reports show college students and even school students using drugs, including ganja, in a very casual manner,” the AIADMK general secretary has claimed. “This has raised serious doubts among the people as to whether the ruling party and the chief minister are protecting the people or shielding those involved in the crimes,” Palaniswami said in a post on the social media platform ‘X’ on Monday night. …

Palaniswami meets Shah in Delhi, discusses seat-sharing

: A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally of the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Madurai, the Dravidian major’s general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami met Amit Shah in New Delhi on Monday night. Though details of the meeting are yet to be revealed, it is understood that the two leaders had discussed seat-sharing for the upcoming Assembly election in Tamil Nadu. As of now, most of the constituents of the NDA, when led by the BJP in the State during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, have remained in the coalition, which is being headed by the AIADMK. Former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, an ally of the BJP till mid-2025, has crossed over to the DMK. While the AIADMK has been asserting that in the event of victory at the hustings, it will form a government of its own, many BJP leaders have been claiming that it will be called the NDA regime. (File) Piyush Goyal, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, during a conversation with CNN-News18’s Rahul Shivshankar at Rising Bharat, expressed confidence over the Bharatiya Janata Party’s performance in the Tamil Nadu elections. “We have a strong alliance which is well-poised to win Tamil Nadu. People are tired of corruption of the DMK government, they are unhappy with the scams, anti-Bharat pronouncements of the ruling Karunanidhi family. People can’t accept the anti-Sanatan statements made by heir apparent and deputy CM. Any well-meaning Tamilian can’t accept Udayanidhi Stalin’s stance on eradicating the Sanatan, India’s ethos, like a mosquito,” said Goyal. “They want a change and the AIADMK-led NDA alliance is well-poised to win Tamil Nadu and Edappadi Palaniswami will be the CM,” he said. Addressing a mega public meeting of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at Madurantakam in Chengalpattu district, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi also participated, Mr. Palaniswami said that since coming to power, the DMK has caused many troubles for the people. “The only achievement of the DMK was corruption. [Former Chief Minister and DMK patriarch] Karunanidhi family looted Tamil Nadu. Now they are trying to push Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi Stalin to [take up] leadership roles,” he said. “But Karunanidhi family cannot come to power anymore. This will be the …

Edappadi K. Palaniswami. | Photo Credit: E. LAKSHMI NARAYANAN The AIADMK general secretary and Leader of Opposition (LOP) in the Assembly, Edappadi K. Palaniswami, on Monday accused the DMK regime of having closed down 210 government schools in the last four-and-a-half years.  On the contrary, the previous AIADMK government had opened 248 primary schools, apart from upgrading 117 primary schools into middle schools; 1,079 middle schools into high schools and 604 high schools into higher secondary schools, Mr Palaniswami told people who gathered near a bus terminus on Tiruvallur-Uthukottai road in the Tiruvallur district. As for arts and science colleges in the State, 96 of them did not have principals. The government was not allowing  minority educational institutions to hire teachers, he alleged. Also, no permission was given to the government-aided colleges to recruit teaching and non-teaching staff, Mr Palaniswami said.  Contrasting the AIADMK regime’s performance in higher education with that of the current government,  the LOP said  sanction was obtained in one year for 11 medical colleges including one in Tiruvallur. Palaniswami should be taught a fitting lesson: Panneerselvam

CHENNAI: Former Chief Minister and coordinator of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Workers’ Rights Retrieval Kazhagam O. Panneerselvam on Wednesday said AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami should be taught a “fitting lesson”. Addressing a meeting of his followers in Chennai, Mr. Panneerselvam said the AIADMK had been experiencing one electoral setback after another after Mr. Palaniswami became the party’s general secretary on the ground that only “unitary leadership” would take the party to greater heights. “Now, members of the party are frustrated and remain rudderless,” he said, addingthat there would be “good tidings” after the month of Thai begins (mid-January 2026). Stalin slams Palaniswami for not raising voice against Centre’s ‘dilution of MGNREGS’

Stalin slams Palaniswami for not raising voice against Centre’s ‘dilution of MGNREGS’

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. File | Photo Credit: N. Thangarathinam Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday (December 23, 2025) accused AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami of spreading falsehoods after being unable to raise his voice against the Centre for diluting the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). In a post on X, Mr. Stalin said even when 100 days of work a year under MGNREGS was guaranteed by law, it was not properly implemented by the BJP government at the Centre, and there were delays in wage payments. “Now, under a new scheme burdened with several conditions, is it really going to provide 125 days of work?” Mr. Stalin wondered. He alleged that the Union government has washed its hands of responsibility and no longer guarantees even a single day of work. “You once claimed to have exerted pressure on your masters not to remove Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the scheme. But what has happened? The Centre does not seem to accord you even the slightest importance,” he said, directing …
