Lok Sabha on Thursday (August 6, 2026) passed a Bill to amend the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 that authorises the government to permit banks and other service providers to levy charges on payments through unified payments interface (UPI) and other notified electronic payment modes. The Taxation and other Laws (Amendment) Bill w through which the government also amended the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, was passed without a debate due to persistent sloganeering by the Opposition over various issues, including alleged theft of donation at the Ram temple in Ayodhya. The amendment seeks to remove the existing legal provision that prevents banks and payment service providers from charging Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on notified electronic payment modes. Real-time payments made through RTGS and NEFT are done by paying a service charge. However, UPI transactions have been exempted from such charges so far. Veteran actor Pradeep Rawat has passed away at the age of 74 after battling cancer. Best known for playing the menacing Ghajini Dharmatma in Aamir Khan’s Ghajini and Deva Singh Sodhi in Lagaan, Rawat’s death was confirmed by his manager and actor Yashpal Sharma. Taking to Instagram, Yashpal Sharma wrote, “Pradeep Rawat Our GajiniDeva of LagaanRIP (sic).” Meanwhile, Rawat’s manager Siddharth Tiwari told Hindustan Times, “He was suffering from cancer, and it had relapsed. He has died a few hours back.” Pradeep Rawat began his acting journey with B.R. Chopra’s iconic television series Mahabharat, where he portrayed Ashwatthama. The Lok Sabha on Monday passed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, raising the sanctioned strength of judges in the top court from 34 to 38, including the Chief Justice of India. The Bill, passed by a voice vote, replaces an ordinance promulgated in May and comes amid a mounting “backlog” of cases before the court. HT Image Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the Bill amid Opposition protests. The Bill states that the persistent gap between institution and disposal of cases has made “docket management” increasingly difficult, particularly for older pending matters and cases needing larger Benches. The Supreme Court’s sanctioned strength has been revised several times since 1950, when the court began with eight judges, including the Chief Justice of India. It was raised to 31 in 2008 and to 34 in 2019. The government now proposes taking it to 38, citing rising litigation and the need for more Benches to hear cases quickly.
