2 min readNew DelhiJul 20, 2026 08:38 AM IST A 42-year-old patient died hours after a ceiling fan allegedly fell on him while he was undergoing treatment in the emergency department of Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital in Northeast Delhi on Saturday night, police said. The incident sparked concerns over safety standards and maintenance at one of the Capital’s largest government hospitals. The hospital, however, denied the incident caused the patient’s death, attributing the cause to underlying illnesses. According to officers, the incident occurred at around 9.30 pm in Emergency Ward 27, where the deceased identified as Mohammad Akbar was receiving treatment. As per eyewitnesses, a ceiling fan suddenly became detached and crashed directly onto Akbar’s bed on Saturday night. According to the police, a nursing officer attending to Akbar was also injured in the incident. The accident triggered panic inside the ward, with hospital staff rushing to provide medical assistance to both the patient and the injured nursing officer, the officer said. A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a consultant doctor at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) District Civil Hospital in Kurukshetra, officials said on Sunday. The girl was later moved to the emergency ward after she began bleeding. It was there that she confided in senior doctors about the incident, prompting them to inform the police, officials stated. Deputy Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar stated that, based on the complaint lodged by the girl’s father, a case has been registered against the doctor under Sections 10 and 6 of the POCSO Act, 2012. In response to the seriousness of the situation and the FIR, the Haryana government has terminated the doctor’s services with immediate effect. Following the incident, State Health Minister and Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak directed that the hospital be sealed and the doctor’s degree be confiscated. Police said the woman, aged 19, had been admitted to the private hospital on Monday as she was suffering from a high fever. Following her complaint, police registered a case of rape against the accused doctor on Thursday. A man admitted to Kailash Deepak Hospital in Delhi`s Anand Vihar was rescued after he climbed onto the ledge of a fifth-floor balcony and threatened to jump on Friday morning, Delhi Fire Service (DFS) officials said. Visuals from the scene showed the man perched on the ledge of the balcony, with a crowd gathered below. A person was also seen attempting to talk to the patient from a nearby window.
