Vaishno Devi Yatra crosses 50 lakh pilgrims in 2026, records 27 per cent YoY growth

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra has achieved a significant milestone in the current calendar year, with the number of pilgrims paying obeisance at the revered cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir”s Reasi district crossing the 50-lakh mark on June 22. This represents an impressive increase of over 27.3 per cent compared to the 39.84 lakh pilgrims who visited the shrine during the corresponding period last year, an official said on Tuesday. “During the same period in 2025, approximately 39.84 lakh pilgrims had visited the holy Shrine, whereas the Yatra during the current year has recorded 50.70 lakh pilgrims, reflecting a substantial increase of 10.86 lakh devotees,” a spokesperson of the Shrine Board said. The first batch of pilgrims for the 2026 yatra was flagged off from Rishikesh on May 20, and reportedly, more than 1.11 lakh devotees have already registered for the pilgrimage. Situated at an altitude of 4,632 metres (15,197 feet), Hemkund Sahib is among the highest gurudwaras in the world. Nestled beside a glacial lake and surrounded by snow-clad Himalayan peaks, the shrine is associated with Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru. The nearby Lakshman Temple also makes the area significant for Hindu pilgrims. How to reach Hemkund Sahib The journey begins at Govindghat, the base point for the trek. Pilgrims travelling by air can fly to Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport, located about 268 km away. Thereafter, 5 kg check-in baggage per pilgrim will be carried on the Ahmedabad-Srinagar flight, while the remaining 30 kg baggage will be transported separately by road to Srinagar. There is no change in the cabin baggage allowance. These arrangements have been necessitated solely by airport operational constraints and aviation safety requirements. The body was being transported in a private ambulance, while six family members were travelling in a separate vehicle that fell into a gorge around 400-500 metres deep. At least seven pilgrims sustained injuries after a bus carrying 25 passengers overturned on the Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway near Shivpuri in Uttarakhand’s Tehri district on Sunday, officials said, reported the PTI. The passengers were returning from Badrinath when the accident occurred. The vehicle was travelling towards Rishikesh when it met with the accident near the Kalthri dumping point, police said. According to police, the bus was carrying 25 passengers along with the driver Rajesh and conductor Sonu, both residents of Dehradun. Driver’s window allegedly opened Police said the driver’s window suddenly opened while the bus was in motion. In an attempt to close it, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and overturn, as per the PTI. All the injured passengers, residents of Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh, were taken to Rishikesh District Hospital for treatment. Their condition is reported to be stable.
