‘No power can force us to bow down under pressure’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday referred to the nuclear tests conducted in Pokhran on May 11, 1998, and said they reflected India’s firm resolve to advance its nuclear programme despite pressure from global powers. While addressing the gathering to commemorate the 75 years of the reconstruction of Somnath Temple in Gujarat, PM Modi said, “Today is important for another reason. On May 11, 1998, India conducted nuclear tests in Pokhran. Our scientists demonstrated India’s calibre and capabilities to the world. This created a global stir. All the world’s energies came forward to stop India and imposed several restrictions. There were attempts to block India economically,” he said. India conducted three nuclear bomb test explosions at the Indian Army’s Pokhran Test Range on May 11, 1998 and tested two more bombs two days later. These tests, codenamed Operation Shakti or strength, would display India’s capability to build fission and thermonuclear weapons with yields up to 200 kilotons, helping India enter the highly guarded club of countries with the capability to deploy nuclear weapons. “At a time, …

From Suda to Tony, a seed of life for Great Indian Bustards | India News

POKHRAN IN Rajasthan’s Thar desert landscape is imprinted in India’s history for the nuclear weapon tests. Now, another milestone, linked to the seeds of new life for the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard (GIB), has lodged itself in Pokhran’s history with the birth of the first bustard chick through artificial insemination last week. Behind the success is a back-story fraught with challenges. To start with, the bustard handlers had to achieve “human imprinting”, which required them to forge close bonds with the large birds, enabling them to train the GIBs for simulated mating with dummy birds. Suda, a three-year-old male bustard at the Ramdevra captive breeding centre in Pokhran, in the eastern part of Jaisalmer district, was chosen for the experiment. He was trained to “mate” with a dummy bird, and his sperm was transported to the Sam captive breeding centre in western Jaisalmer, about three hours away, to impregnate Tony, a five-year-old female bustard there. Since 2019, these two centres have been the ground zero for India’s long-term GIB recovery project, where scientists from …
