A day after a Delhi Police constable allegedly shot his wife dead on her birthday in east Delhi’s Vinod Nagar area, investigators on Tuesday said five police teams are conducting raids across Delhi-NCR and Haryana to trace the accused, who remains absconding. File Photo Credit: Special Arrangement Following the recent arrest of four youngsters for collecting hallucinogenic mushrooms from the reserve forests in The Nilgiris, the district police and the forest department are to conduct joint patrols in areas surrounding forest areas to prevent people from collecting the substances. According to police, Akash, a 20-year-old youth from Bombay Castle in The Nilgiris, as well as his friends from Coimbatore, Immanuel (19), Dhanush (21) and Harish (20), had trespassed into a reserve forest near Finger Post in Udhagamandalam and are said to have been collecting a species of mushroom known commonly as fly agaric, a known hallucinogenic mushroom that grows under particular species of trees following spells of heavy rain. Police said that in 2024, Akash and his girlfriend had consumed alcohol and the mushroom, leading to his girlfriend’s death. Police had arrested Akash and sent him to judicial custody. In one of its biggest coordinated anti-narcotics drives, the Rajasthan Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) carried out simultaneous operations across seven districts, arresting eight alleged drug smugglers and seizing large quantities of poppy husk, heroin (chitta), cannabis (ganja) and the synthetic drug MD. The teams also impounded four vehicles — one car and three motorcycles — allegedly used in drug trafficking. The statewide operation was conducted under the guidance of Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Kumar Sharma and Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Dinesh MN, with ANTF teams working in coordination with local police units. A seven-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped by two persons and hit with an iron road on the head in Ghaziabad late Friday, before she fell through the shaft from the third floor of an under-construction mall into the basement. Her body was recovered from the basement around 1 am on Saturday. Later in the day, a man was arrested and a juvenile detained in connection to the incident, said ACP (Officiating), Nandgram, Priyashi Pal. DCP (City and Trans Hindon) Dhawal Jaiswal said the two were identified through CCTV camera footage, which captured them leading the girl away to the under-construction building. “She was raped on the third floor of the building, after which the accused hit her on the head with an iron rod. Of the 478 police stations in the State, 414 will have SIs as SHOs while in 64 major stations inspectors will be retained in the post, the Minister said. He was addressing reporters at the Ernakulam Press Club during the launch of a programme declaring mediapersons also as Toofan Warriors, the volunteers involved in the ongoing State-wide anti-drug operations. Mr. Chennithala said the earlier system of SIs assuming charge of police stations was being reintroduced as part of a set of measures to revamp the police force. The decision to revert SHO duties from inspectors to sub-inspectors was taken based on the report by an expert committee, the Minister said. “At present, inspectors are the SHOs in all 478 stations.
