Telephone tapping case: Prabhakar Rao will be proclaimed offender if he fails to appear before court by June 20

A local court here might announce T. Prabhakar Rao, the absconding accused in telephone tapping case, as proclaimed offender if he does not appear before the court by June 20.  The Fourteenth Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate passed a direction to this extent. Retired IPS officer and former chief of Special Intelligence Branch, Mr. Rao held several key positions in police department. According to police department, he ‘fled the country’ on learning that the telephone tapping case was registered. However, Mr. Rao in his communication to the police department in the affidavits he had filed in the courts maintained that he had gone to U.S. for medical treatment for serious ailment and was ready to cooperate with the investigators. The Telangana High Court had rejected his anticipatory bail petition following which he had moved the Supreme Court.  In January, the investigators filed a petition in the trial court requesting it to declare Mr. Rao as a proclaimed offender under Section 82 of Criminal Procedure Code. The official number of deaths is yet to be known. Four joint families lived in the building. Mr. Prabhakar, who reached the spot, said that a short circuit was the cause of the fire accident. Justice J. Sreenivas Rao of Telangana High Court on Friday dismissed a criminal petition filed by retired IPS officer T. Prabhakar Rao, the prime accused in telephone tapping case, seeking protection from arrest. The ‘absconding officer’, whose passport had been revoked by the Union government recently, is presently hiding in United States of America. While the INTERPOL had issued a red-corner notice seeking detention of Mr. Rao, the latter knocked the doors of the HC seeking a direction not to arrest him if he returned to India. He stated in the petition that he would co-operate with the investigators on his return to India but wanted an anticipatory bail. Supreme Court senior counsel Sidharth Luthra and Public Prosecutor (Home) Palle Nageshwar Rao presented arguments before the bench opposing the anticipatory bail plea. Senior counsel T. Niranjan Reddy presented contentions seeking protection from arrest to Mr. Rao in the telephone tapping case.
