The police in Punjab’s Barnala Monday claimed to have cracked the case of the kidnapping of a two-year-old child from the slums behind the grain market in the city within three days with the arrest of all nine accused. Among those arrested are Ravinder Kaur, an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) based in Ludhiana; self-styled doctor Vikas Tiwari, who runs a hospital; Kaur’s son Kohinoor Singh; Damanpreet Singh; and Aditya. Damanpreet and Aditya were involved in an Rs 8 crore bank robbery in Ludhiana in June 2023 and have been out on bail since January 12, 2024. The other accused who were arrested include Manav Arora, Davinder Singh, Rohit, and Dashrath, who was booked in another case of kidnapping a child in Madhya Pradesh. In a significant administrative move, Chandigarh’s Director General of Police (DGP), Surendra Singh Yadav, has been transferred and appointed as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Border Security Force (BSF) on deputation. Senior Advocate Gurminder Singh ‘Gerry’ Saturday resigned as Advocate General of Punjab, 18 months after he was appointed to the post. Gurminder Singh is the fourth person to resign from post of the AG in Punjab in three years of the Aam Aadmi Party government. Gurminder Singh was appointed as AG on October 6, 2023 after Vinod Ghai had stepped down citing “personal reasons”. While Gurminder Singh was not available for comments, a senior government official confirmed the development to The Indian Express. “His resignation has been accepted. Within two-three days, the government will appoint a new AG,” said the official. He added that AG’s term is ending on March 31. Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who was on an indefinite hunger strike over various demands, consumed water and broke his fast soon after the Punjab government released 56 arrested farm union leaders, including Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) coordinator Sarwan Singh Pandher and SKM (non-political) spokesperson Abhimanyu Kohar early on Friday. Dallewal, who is the coordinator of SKM (non-political), had refused to take water since the police evicted the protesters at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders and arrested hundreds of farmers on March 19 as they returned from a meeting with a central delegation. Sources indicated that no more farmers remain to be released. Soon after getting released from different jails, nearly 14 of the farm union leaders met Dallewal at Patiala’s Park Hospital. Mohali: A man who allegedly pushed a 39-year-old scientist during a parking altercation in Punjab’s Mohali, leading to the latter’s death, was arrested on Saturday, police said. The accused, Maninder Pal Singh Monty, will be produced in court on Sunday, the police added. On Tuesday night, Monty had reportedly pushed Dr Abhishek Swarnkar, who worked at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali, to the ground and punched him during an altercation over parking near the scientist’s rented accommodation in Sector 67. CCTV footage of the incident shows Monty hitting Swarnkar, as both families intervene and pull them away. Swarnkar, who had recently undergone a kidney transplant and was on dialysis, was rushed to the hospital where he died. The scientist’s family had demanded strict action against the accused, who went missing after the incident. Police in Punjab on Wednesday set up multiple checkpoints, and stepped up security at all entry points of Chandigarh as it thwarted an attempt by farmers to march to the Union Territory to take part in week-long dharna called by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha. In the process, it detained several senior farmer union leaders who were later released in the evening. Meanwhile, the farmers launched dharnas at 28 places — the spots where they were stopped by the Punjab Police.
