At least eight people, comprising women and children, were killed and 11 suffered grievous injuries on Saturday in a head-on collision between an overcrowded pick-up (a commercial vehicle usually used for transporting people) and a heavy-duty truck in Punjab’s Ferozepur district, police said.  Nearly 25 people, all belonging to a close-knit family from Jalabad village, were travelling to a religious place Beas in Amritsar district to perform the last rites of a family member. The accident occurred on the Ferozepur-Fazilka road at around at 5.40 A.M. The collision between the pick-up vehicle and the truck was so massive that the former was dragged and damaged massively. The police, passersby and local residents had to tear down mangled remains to take out several occupants who were trapped inside the vehicle. Four occupants of the pick-up vehicle were killed on the spot, while four succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital. Providing information about the initiative, Adhiraj Pathania, deputy manager at Punjab Agro, said the QR code system has been introduced to ensure transparency and authenticity in agricultural products, particularly jaggery.“This QR code-based system enables consumers to trace the product back to its source. By simply scanning the code on the package, customers can access complete information about where and how the product was produced,” Pathania explained. In a significant move linked to the Central government–mandated power sector reforms, the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has issued instructions to implement prepaid smart metering for government electricity connections from February 15. The instructions were issued through a letter dated January 28 addressed to chief engineers of various districts and are aimed at meeting reform conditions that would allow Punjab to avail of additional borrowing space to the extent of 0.5 per cent of the state’s gross state domestic product (GSDP). In 2021-22, the Centre introduced a power sector reform-linked borrowing incentive in the form of additional borrowing space up to 0.5 per cent of GSDP. According to the letter, the move is in compliance with the circular dated February 7, 2023, and its subsequent amendment of February 14, 2023. In the February 7 circular, the scheme of the installation of prepaid smart meters was introduced for government departments, and on February 14, an amendment was made to the effect that the scheme would not be applicable to government hospitals, street lights, and …

Chandigarh: An Army jawan posted in Jammu and Kashmir has been arrested for allegedly imparting online training to the man who hurled a grenade at the residence of a Jalandhar-based YouTuber last month, Punjab Police said on Thursday. A court in Jalandhar sent the jawan, Sukhcharan Singh, to five-day police remand, police officials said. The main accused, Hardik Kamboj, hurled the hand grenade at the house of YouTuber Rozer Sandhu on the intervening night of March 15 and 16. However, the grenade did not explode. During the course of investigation, it came to light that Singh provided online training to Kamboj on throwing the grenade at the residence of the YouTuber, said Senior Superintendent of Police (Jalandhar Rural) Harvinder Singh Virk.
