Team of four officers to conduct preliminary inquiry against Ramachandra Rao

The State government has formed a team of four IPS officers, led by R. Hitendra, Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order), to conduct a preliminary inquiry in the case pertaining to videos purportedly showing the now suspended Director-General of Police K. Ramachandra Rao misbehaving with multiple women in his office.  The government was mulling over handing over the case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). However, a committee has now been formed to hold a preliminary inquiry. Based on this report, the next course of action will be decided. With the women in the video not coming forward to lodge any complaints, there is no scope for a criminal investigation and only an inquiry can be held, sources said.  The inquiry committee will have Chetan Singh Rathore, Inspector-General of Police (Northern Range), Kala Krishnaswamy, Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Crimes), and C.B. The inquiry into the case involving videos purportedly showing Director-General of Police (DGP) K. Ramachandra Rao misbehaving with multiple women in his office, is likely to be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The Karnataka government has placed DGP (Civil Rights Enforcement) K Ramachandra Rao under suspension with immediate effect, pending inquiry, citing conduct unbecoming of a government servant and causing embarrassment to the state administration. News channels beamed video on Monday purportedly showing Rao in an alleged compromising position with women. The video went viral in the social media as well. Rao sought to reject the videos outright terming them “fabricated and false”. In an official order issued by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) on Monday, the government said videos and news reports widely circulated on television channels and digital media platforms showed the senior IPS officer acting in an “obscene manner”, prompting the decision to initiate disciplinary action. “Vide videos and news reports widely broadcast on public news channels and media platforms, it is observed that Dr K Ramachandra Rao has acted in an obscene manner which is unbecoming of a Government Servant and also causing embarrassment to the Government,” the government order said.
