Did you know Yash’s real-life bodyguard Ramachandra Raju played antagonist ‘Garuda’ in KGF?

Rocking star Yash brought nothing less than a global phenomenon on-screen with the  KGF series. Besides him, it was also the unmissable performances put on by the side characters that also drew attention. For instance, it was the role of the antagonist named Garuda, who got much appreciation for his role. However, did you know his role was essayed by none other than Yash’s real-life bodyguard, Ramachandra Raju? Yes, you heard that right. He had worked with the rock star for more than 12 years, employed as his personal bodyguard and driver.  In fact, Ramachandra Raju had left his full-time job in a construction company to be with Yash. However, deep down he always had a passion for acting, and it wasn’t until Prashanth Neel noticed it while narrating the script to Yash.  Impressed by his forte, the filmmaker roped him on board the project, before which Ramachandra had to participate in a workshop for about a year to achieve the minute perfections required in this craft. Moreover, Ramachandra also had to fit in a …

Every party in India has been hostile to environmental sustainability: Ramachandra Guha

Every party in India has been hostile to environmental sustainability: Ramachandra Guha

Speaking with Nature: The Origins of Indian Environmentalism is a book that historian Ramachandra Guha almost did not write. Having started research on it nearly two decades ago, life had other plans, and Mr. Guha’s path veered towards other monumental works such as India After Gandhi and his celebrated biographies of Mahatma Gandhi, which have defined much of his career. However, thanks to his deep-rooted interest in environmental history, he picked up the threads — or rather, reams of notes — and dived back into the project. The result is a compelling exploration of 10 early environmental thinkers —  from poet Rabindranath Tagore to the lesser-known scientist couple Albert and Gabrielle Howard and naturalist M. Krishnan — whose ideas have shaped India’s ecological landscape in the pre-climate change era. In a conversation before the launch of his book in Chennai, Mr. Guha reflects on the diverse figures featured in the book, who lived and wrote across a century of Indian history, and how their contributions often bridged the gap between environmentalism and social justice. Their …

Literature can explain socio-political conditions of an era: Ramachandra Guha

Literature has the ability to explain the socio-political and economic conditions of an era, said eminent historian Ramachandra Guha. Delivering the golden jubilee lecture of DC Books on “Where History and Literature Meet” here on Saturday, Mr. Guha said that history is a combination of literature and social science.  “Literature captured the intense emotions and fears of Bengal and Punjab during the partition through powerful poetry. Similarly, Kerala’s transformation over the past century — from a caste-ridden society to one marked by Gulf migrations and advances in women’s education — is vividly reflected in its modern literature, including poems and novels. This dynamic interplay between literature and history reveals how written words can illuminate and shape our understanding of the past, he said. The event held at the Kerala Sahitya Akademi was presided over by K. Satchidanandan. M. Mukundan delivered the keynote address. This was followed by an exhibition of “Cheriya Manushyarum Valiya Lokavum”, the first graphic narrative in India. A musical tribute was also held in honour of renowned lyricists P. Bhaskaran, Vayalar Rama …
