Adultery no longer a crime’: Jharkhand High Court reinstates dismissed constable | Legal News

4 min readRanchiJul 8, 2026 02:59 PM IST The Jharkhand High Court has set aside the dismissal of a Jharkhand Armed Police (JAP) constable, observing that “adultery is no longer a criminal offence”, while holding that the disciplinary proceedings against him were arbitrary and violative of Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution. However, the order relates only to the departmental action against the constable. The criminal proceedings arising out of the FIR will continue independently before the competent court. The case pertains to Bharat Pathak, who joined the JAP as a constable in 2007. In 2023, a woman approached the Commandant of JAP-10 in Ranchi alleging that although both of them were married and had children, Pathak had married her and lived with her from October 2019 to April 2023. She alleged that the constable established a physical relationship with her and later refused to accept it. Claiming her life had been ruined, she sought action against him. Three people have been arrested in connection with the alleged petrol bomb attack on a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) office in Ranchi, reported the PTI. Police are investigating possible links between the accused and terror organisations, including suspected connections with Pakistan-based networks. One of the accused was injured during a brief exchange of fire with police after attempting to escape from custody, officials said. The incident came to light after the RSS alleged that petrol bombs were thrown at its office in the Nivaranpur area of Ranchi during the early hours of Wednesday, as per the PTI. Following the complaint, police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the case and identify those responsible. Ranchi RSS office attack: Police detain four, SIT begins investigation

Police have intensified their investigation into the petrol bomb attack on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) provincial office in Nivaranpur, Ranchi.  According to IANS, the police officials have also detained four individuals in connection with the incident. Those detained include the driver of the vehicle allegedly used in the attack and two of the suspected attackers. Probe underway to find the motive  According to the police officials, the detainees are being questioned to determine the motive behind the attack and uncover any larger conspiracy. The incident occurred on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday and was captured on CCTV cameras installed near the premises. Preliminary investigations revealed that the attackers arrived in a rented car.
