New Delhi, A 4K restored version of master filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s 1970 film “Aranyer Din Ratri” will be screened at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival under the Classics section, the organisers said on Thursday. Satyajit Ray’s ‘Aranyer Din Ratri’ to be screened under Classics section of Cannes Film Festival Based on the novel of the same name by author Sunil Gangopadhyay, the Bengali-language film, titled “Days and Nights in the Forest” in English, featured an ensemble cast of Soumitra Chatterjee, Subhendu Chatterjee, Samit Bhanja, Robi Ghosh, Aparna Sen, Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal. The movie, which explored themes of alienation, class, and modernity, followed the story of four city-bred men who escape to the forests of Palamau for a carefree holiday, only to undergo a journey of self-discovery. “Aranyer Din Ratri” is presented and restored by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project at L’Immagine Ritrovata in collaboration with the Film Heritage Foundation , Janus Films, and the Criterion Collection. Maha Kumbh To Wind Up Today After Holy Dip For Shiv Ratri

So far, a record 63.36 crore people from every echelon of society   have taken the holy dip at Prayagraj’s Triveni Sangam – the meeting point of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and the long-lost Saraswati. Huge arrangements have been made for today’s dip that will begin before dawn and ring down the curtains on the festival that takes place every 12 years. .  Since Monday, crowds started swelling at the mela grounds for the final “Amrit Snan” that will begin in the early hours.  The government has taken comprehensive measures that include efficient crowd management, enhanced sanitation and adequate medical facilities.  This is complemented by elaborate arrangements for security, transportation and emergency response systems.  The extra focus on arrangements came after the January 26 stampede on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, in which more than 30 people died and more than 60 were injured. After objections by Supreme Court, West Bengal govt. removes provisions in Ratri Sathi initiative

Mamata Banerjee | Photo Credit: ANI West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday (September 26, 2024), said that her government has removed provisions in the ‘Ratri Sathi ( Helpers of the night)‘ initiative which were objected to by the Supreme Court. “We are working on the implementation of Ratri Sathi except the ones which the Supreme Court raised objections to,” the Chief Minister said. During the hearing in the Supreme Court on September 17, a three judge bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud had directed the State government to do away with provisions of the initiative to restrict women doctors to 12-hour shifts and take no night duty at hospitals. The Court had also questioned the State government initiative of deploying contractual staff for Ratri Sathi initiative, pointing out that the accused in the rape and murder of the victim at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital was a contractual worker.
