Coonoor residents demand capture and relocation of sloth bear

Coonoor residents have urged the Forest Department to capture and relocate a sloth bear which, they allege, has been breaking into homes in search of food. According to residents from Hatherly Road, the sloth bear has been breaking into houses, stealing food and attacking local residents. One resident of the area, speaking to The Hindu, said that the animal had also entered the house of a couple and had attacked them, causing them injuries. The resident stated that the bear was also breaking into shops near the area and stealing provisions. Despite a cage being placed in the area on Monday, it has so far managed to evade capture they said. When contacted, top officials from the Nilgiris Forest Division stated that they are continuing their operations to capture the animal and are also considering tranquilising and relocating it away from the area. Sudan, Somalia Or Somaliland? US, Israel Turn To Africa For Gaza Relocation

Jerusalem: The US and Israel have reached out to officials of three East African governments to discuss using their territories as potential destinations for resettling Palestinians uprooted from the Gaza Strip under President Donald Trump’s proposed postwar plan, American and Israeli officials told The Associated Press. The contacts with Sudan, Somalia and the breakaway region of Somalia known as Somaliland reflect the determination by the US and Israel to press ahead with a plan that has been widely condemned and raised serious legal and moral issues. Because all three places are poor, and in some cases wracked by violence, the proposal also casts doubt on Trump’s stated goal of resettling Gaza’s Palestinians in a “beautiful area.” Officials from Sudan said they have rejected overtures from the US, while officials from Somalia and Somaliland told The Associated Press that they were not aware of any contacts. Under Trump’s plan, Gaza’s more than 2 million people would be permanently sent elsewhere. He has proposed the US would take ownership of the territory, oversee a lengthy cleanup process …

Fuel leak: demand for relocation of HPCL depot gains momentum

Ragesh The recent massive diesel leak from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) depot at Elathur in Kozhikode has escalated the local protest demanding the relocation of the depot to Kannur. While the Elathur Janakeeya Samrakshana Koottayma, a non-political organisation, has been making this demand for decades, the authorities are now, for the first time, taking notice, with the leak serving as a crucial catalyst. The fuel depot was established at Elathur, between the railway line and the National Highway, around 35 years ago. The protest began in the early 1990s when locals realised that the site, initially expected to house a petrol bunk, was a depot. “Due to a lack of awareness at the time, we thought it could provide job opportunities. It was much later that we realised the danger behind it,” said Elathur ward councillor Manoharan Mangariyil. He said fuel leaks and fire mishaps …

NTCA letter to expedite forest relocation from tiger zones draws activist ire

A tiger is seen yawning in a pond amid the monsoon season, at Assam State Zoo, in Guwahati. | Photo Credit: ANI A recent letter by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) — the apex body tasked with tiger conservation — asking 19 States to “prioritise” the removal of villagers who are residents in the core tiger zones has drawn the ire of several organisations and activists, who have written to Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav protesting these directions. “It has been observed that 591 villages comprising 64,801 families are still residing in the core area (of the tiger zone). The progress of village relocation is very slow and it poses grave concern in the light of tiger conservation,” said the letter written by G.S. Bharadwaj, Additional DGF (Project Tiger) and Member Secretary, NTCA to Subhash Malkede, Chief Wildlife Warden, Karnataka on June 19 this year. Though The Hindu has only viewed this letter, similar letters have been sent to other States too. Karnataka has 81 villages in the core zone with 1,175 families having …
