At least 12 workers were trapped inside an under-construction road tunnel in Sikkim’s Namchi district after a landslide blocked its entrance on Monday afternoon, police said. The landslide also triggered a suspected gas leak inside the Samardung tunnel, they said. The gas is believed to be naturally emanating from underground strata or rock formations disturbed by the landslide, they added. Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), SDRF, police and the Fire and Emergency Services are carrying out the rescue operation, a police officer said. “Rescue operations are underway, but the operation has been complicated by the presence of gas inside the tunnel. Several rescue personnel experienced dizziness and lost consciousness while attempting to reach the trapped workers,” he said. “Ambulances have been kept on standby, while rescuers equipped with gas masks are trying to reach the trapped workers inside the tunnel,” he added. At least eight people died, and twelve others were injured following massive landslide incidents that occurred in multiple locations in Nagaland’s Mon district on Sunday. Wennyei Konyak, Deputy Commissioner of Mon district, told ANI over the phone that so far, four bodies have been recovered, and four others are still under the debris. “Eight people have died in the landslide incidents triggered by incessant heavy rainfall that occurred in multiple locations in Mon district. The most affected areas are Mon town and Tizit. The heavy rainfall started at around 1 am, and we received information about landslide incidents at around 6-7 am. SDRF, police, Assam Rifles, NDRF teams and locals are engaged in search and rescue operations. So far, we have recovered 4 bodies, including three females and a male, from the debris. 12 others were injured. Search and rescue operations are underway in multiple locations,” Wennyei Konyak said. The rescue operation entered its tenth day today as the girl fell into the borewell on December 23. Chetna was stuck in a 150-foot deep borewell since December 23. Soon after rescue operations by NDRF and SDRF were initiated. The teams were working day and night to dig a parallel tunnel. In perhaps one of the longest rescue operations in the state, it lasted for over 160 hours for which the family members have blamed the administration for being negligent. The administration on the other hand has claimed it is one of the toughest operations. In a remarkable display of prompt and coordinated action, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Thursday successfully rescued nine crew members from the sunken Indian vessel MSV Taj Dhare Haram in the North Arabian Sea.  This daring humanitarian search and rescue mission carried out under challenging sea conditions, involved close collaboration between the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres (MRCCs) of Mumbai, India, and Karachi, Pakistan. The mechanized sailing vessel (dhow) MSV Taj Dhare Haram, which had departed from Mundra and was enroute to Socotra, Yemen, reportedly sank on 26 December 2024, due to rough seas and onboard flooding.  The distress call was detected by an ICG Dornier aircraft that was conducting surveillance, which immediately alerted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai and the ICG Regional Headquarters (North West) in Gandhinagar.
