Pune lab’s DME innovation may reshape India’s household cooking fuel sector

Pune lab’s DME innovation may reshape India’s household cooking fuel sector

Every day, millions of Indian households rely on LPG cylinders for cooking, but scientists at the CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Pune, are working on a homegrown alternative called Dimethyl Ether (DME) that could reduce India’s dependence on imported fuel, ANI reported.  What is DME and why it matters Developed at CSIR-NCL, DME is being positioned as a clean fuel that can be produced domestically using coal, biomass, and methanol. Researchers say it closely matches LPG in usage and can help ease pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, ideas, images, or text presented here. UDF comeback to reshape political balance in Malabar

UDF comeback to reshape political balance in Malabar

The performance of the three major fronts in the three-tier local body polls last week reveals that the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has scripted a surprising comeback that could potentially reshape the political balance in Malabar. However, the results across the six districts have not eroded the base of the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI-M]-led Left Democratic Front (LDF), which is politically strong in Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, and Palakkad districts. This was evident in the number of seats won by the Left parties in the district panchayats, undoubtedly attributed to political mandate, which were nine out of 18 in Kasaragod, 18 out of 25 in Kannur, 13 out of 28 in Kozhikode and 19 out of 31 in Palakkad. The same voting pattern could be seen in block panchayats – Kasaragod four out of six, Kannur – eight out of 11, Kozhikode eight out of 12 and nine out of 13 in Palakkad. Such an uptrend was not seen in Wayanad where the UDF converted what had been a closely balanced contest …

Space Research Reveals How Icy Comets and Asteroids Could Reshape Earth-Like Planets

Space Research Reveals How Icy Comets and Asteroids Could Reshape Earth-Like Planets

Recent studies revealed that the collision of comets may lead to an impact that can affect the atmosphere of the Earth like planets, especially the ones that orbit M-dwarf stars. These findings have not just widened the understanding of planetary evolution and also gives hopes in identifying the far habitable world. There are chances that even the small icy comets could fetch water and oxygen to other exoplanets. The research started in September 2024, by a team led by Dr. Felix Sainsbury Martinez, studied the effects of icy comet impacts on the terrestrial planets that are tidally locked. Comet Impacts on Tidally Locked Exoplanets The researchers simulated a 2.5 km ice comet that impacts the Earth in a kind of atmosphere simulation. In findings, they exposed that such kinds of impact could even change the chemistry of atmosphere, and increase the water vapour together with hydrogen or oxygen-rich molecules, but decrease the ozone level by almost 10%. Such changes can be observed through current space-based telescopes, published in the Astrophysical Journal. Asteroid Impacts and Earth’s …

Hidden Solar Cycle Could Reshape Space Weather for the Next 50 Years, Finds Study

Hidden Solar Cycle Could Reshape Space Weather for the Next 50 Years, Finds Study

The Gleissberg Cycle, named after the German astronomer Wolfgang Gleissberg, helps to explain why space weather is projected to get more intense in the following decades. More sunspots, flares, and coronal mass ejections result from the sun’s twisted magnetic field in this cycle. The proton soup surrounding Earth will get denser as solar cycle 25 wanes and passes. Long-term observations of the sun’s continuous active character suggest more high-energy protons and hint towards Earth’s atmosphere getting hotter. Hidden Solar Cycle Awakens, Fueling Surging Solar Activity As per the new study, the unexpected surge of solar activity during the ongoing solar maximum may be tied to a lesser-known, 100-year-long cycle that is just beginning to ramp up again. The findings could lead to further increases in solar activity that may threaten Earth-orbiting spacecraft and continue to trigger vibrant auroras across the globe. Influenced by periodic solar activity patterns, the 11-year solar cycle is said to be a natural fluctuation in the activity of our home star that spans a tranquil solar minimum to a chaotic maximum, …

Here’s How Nuclear Clocks Could Redefine Time and Reshape Modern Technology

Here’s How Nuclear Clocks Could Redefine Time and Reshape Modern Technology

Timekeeping, a cornerstone of modern technology and daily life, is poised to achieve unprecedented accuracy due to groundbreaking research in atomic and nuclear clocks. Essential for global positioning systems (GPS), telecommunications and financial networks, the definition of a “second” has evolved over centuries. The latest innovations could lead to a redefinition of the second, enhancing accuracy across numerous applications, according to recent scientific developments. Transition from Atomic to Nuclear Clocks As per a report by Phys.org, the current standard for measuring a second is based on electron transitions in caesium-133 atoms, with a frequency of 9,192,631,770 Hertz. While highly precise, scientists have been exploring elements with higher transition frequencies for even greater accuracy, according to several reoorts. Strontium, with a transition frequency in the visible light range, has shown promise. As per various sources, in 2021, researchers highlighted its potential and a redefinition of the second using strontium is being considered for implementation by 2030. In September 2024, advancements in nuclear clocks were reported by a team in the United States, marking a significant step …

BRICS+ Wants To Reshape US-led Economic Order. It Won’t Be Easy

BRICS+ Wants To Reshape US-led Economic Order. It Won’t Be Easy

It is 15 years since its first summit. Back then. BRICS was BRIC. And now, it’s not just BRICS but BRICS+. The summit in Kazan is seeing the member nations go up from five to nine, with one more, Saudi Arabia, having been invited to join. According to Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, there are 30 more countries that have been in touch over joining the BRICS+ in some format or the other. When Goldman Sach’s economist Jim O’Neill coined the acronym BRIC and predicted that the economies of the four member countries – Brazil, Russia, India, and China – would dominate the global economy by 2050, his projection was based only on the growth of the four nations. The grouping now represents a combined GDP that exceeds the G7’s by “about 5 percentage points”, said the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the eve of the Summit. A briefing note of the European Parliament, titled Expansion of BRICS: A Quest for Greater Global Influence, says that BRICS+ accounts for 37.3% of the world’s GDP. …

Stage set for Trump-Harris Presidential debate that could reshape 2024 race

Image Source : AP Presidential debate between Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump meet for the first time on Tuesday night in their only scheduled debate, a clash that could prove pivotal in their pitched battle for the White House. The nationally televised debate beginning at 9 p.m. ET (0100 GMT on Wednesday) takes place just eight weeks before the Nov. 5 election. The race is a close one that could easily swing in either direction and early voting will start in some states in the coming days. The encounter is particularly important for Harris, with opinion polls showing that more than a quarter of likely voters feel they do not yet know enough about her, in contrast to the well-known former president. The debate offers Harris, a former prosecutor, a chance to make her case against Trump, whose felony convictions, outspoken backing for supporters convicted in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol and frequent falsehoods offer plenty of fertile ground. It will be the …

Flexible office spaces reshape post-COVID work environments

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the office space landscape in India has seen a significant transformation. The shift has impacted how offices operate, sparked innovative ideas in modern office space designs, and pushed organisations to rethink traditional office setups and shift to more agile and dynamic work environments. Among various changes, a key trend post-COVID has been the surge in flexible office arrangements, with larger office spaces being fragmented into smaller spaces. The trend has emerged as a mainstay of modern work culture, leading to diverse working styles and has introduced flexibility into the office real estate market. The rise of hybrid work models, capital intelligence, demand for flexibility in leases, and a shift in work culture have all fuelled the transition towards flexible spaces. From start-ups to small, medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large corporations, the demand for flexible strategies has grown. According to a recent report by the CBRE India Research on India’s Office & Flex Outlook 2024, India remains the fastest-growing flexible office market in the world with a total stock …

Lok Sabha elections 2024: Can tech reshape the poll campaign? | Latest News India

India epitomises the global communication technology revolution. In the early 1990s, there were only an estimated six landline phones for every 1,000 Indians and waiting times were measured in months. Today, smartphones can be purchased over the counter within minutes and their presence is ubiquitous. This transformation is further enabled by India’s cheap mobile data rates. By the end of 2022, roughly two-thirds of Indians were using smartphones, and by 2026, India will have an estimated one billion smartphone users. India’s political parties have increasingly turned to social media and the messaging app WhatsApp in their campaigns, leading observers to characterise the 2019 parliamentary elections as “the WhatsApp election”. The ongoing prevalence of mass campaign rallies in the digital age motivates a broader question about modern campaigns in India.
