After weeks of campaigning, they are now tasked with guarding the people’s mandate until counting day on May 4, by monitoring CCTV footage from the strongroom at Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat), where electronic voting machines (EVMs) from the constituency are stored. The UDF deployed the surveillance team after the Election Commission allowed political party representatives to watch live CCTV feeds from strongrooms, addressing concerns over possible electoral malpractices. Sikkim sets up round-the-clock LPG monitoring system over supply worries

The Government of Sikkim has established a centralised State Control Room in Gangtok along with district-level control rooms in all six districts to monitor and regulate LPG distribution. The move comes amid concerns over supply disruptions due to the current geopolitical situation due to West Asia conflict. According to the Food & Civil Supplies Department, the control rooms will operate round-the-clock to ensure smooth distribution, prevent black marketing, and address public grievances. A regulated refill system has been introduced, allowing domestic LPG refills every 25 days in urban areas and 45 days in rural regions, reported IANS. Priority in commercial LPG supply will be given to essential services such as hospitals and educational institutions. Authorities have also mandated strict enforcement of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, along with daily reporting from district units to the State Control Room. Oil companies, including IOCL, HPCL and BPCL, will coordinate with the government to maintain an uninterrupted supply. The Local Self Government department (LSGD) has set up an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled call centre which will provide round-the-clock information to the public. The call centre will be available at +914712525100. Minister for Local Self Governments M.B. Rajesh will launch the call centre at Mascot Hotel here at 2.30 p.m. Through the call centre, information about the services available to the public from the department will be provided, in addition to resolution of various doubts regarding panchayat and municipality building regulations, panchayat license rules, and civil registration rules like birth, death, marriage. The call centre system currently provided as part of K-Smart will be becoming completely virtual and AI-based through this project. The AI-based virtual assistant is being introduced under the name ‘Smarty’. Image Source : PTI (FILE) Supreme Court The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday overturned the Guwahati High Court’s order mandating the deployment of security guards round-the-clock at all Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) to ensure entry of only one person at a time. A bench comprising Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran considered arguments presented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on behalf of various banks, stating that it was impractical to station security personnel at all ATMs across the state. Practical challenges highlighted Mehta pointed out that Assam alone has approximately 4,000 ATMs, making it unfeasible to deploy security guards at every location. He emphasized that globally recognized security measures, such as the installation of CCTV cameras, serve as an effective deterrent against fraudulent activities. Stay on High Court’s Order Since 2016 The Supreme Court had earlier stayed the High Court’s directive in December 2016.
