Rare Sahara meteorite may reveal a lost planet from early solar system | Technology News

3 min readJun 4, 2026 07:17 PM IST A rare meteorite recovered from the Sahara Desert is offering scientists a glimpse into a previously unknown world that may have existed more than 4.5 billion years ago, shortly after the solar system formed. Found in 2019, the meteorite NWA 12774 is super rare, belonging to a group called angrites. These things are really old, some of the earliest volcanic rocks from our solar system. They give us a glimpse into what it was like when planets were just getting started. A recent study in Earth and Planetary Science Letters has a cool theory about where NWA 12774 came from. It might’ve originated on a big planetary body that’s since vanished. So, this challenges older ideas suggesting angrites came from smaller asteroids. Scientists examined the meteorite and identified crystals of a mineral called clinopyroxene that were unusually rich in aluminium. According to the research team, the mineral could only have formed under extremely high pressures, estimated at more than 17.5 kilobars. Such conditions are difficult to explain …

Sahara desert, world’s most arid place, witnesses floods for first time in 50 years

Image Source : AP A view of lakes caused by heavy rainfall between sand dunes in the desert town of Merzouga Morocco: A rare deluge of rainfall left blue lagoons of water amid the palm trees and sand dunes of the Sahara desert, nourishing some of its driest regions with more water than they had seen in decades. Southeastern Morocco’s desert is among the most arid places in the world and rarely experiences rain in late summer. The Moroccan government said two days of rainfall in September exceeded yearly averages in several areas that see less than 250 millimetres (10 inches) annually, including Tata, one of the areas hit hardest. In Tagounite, a village about 450 kilometres (280 miles) south of the capital, Rabat, more than 100 millimetres (3.9 inches) were recorded in a 24-hour period. Sahara Desert Turns Green, NASA Shares Stunning Image of Transformation

One of the driest places on Earth is seeing a surprising burst of greenery, as heavy rainfall has led to vegetation sprouting across the typically barren Sahara Desert. NASA’s satellite images reveal patches of plant life emerging in the desert following an extratropical cyclone that drenched parts of northwestern Africa on September 7 and 8. Regions in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, which rarely receive rain, are now showing traces of green, according to NASA’s Earth Observatory. Shrubs and trees are growing in low-lying areas like riverbeds, explained Sylwia Trzaska, a climate variability researcher at the Columbia Climate School. Peter de Menocal, president of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, noted that while it’s rare, plant life does respond quickly to heavy rain events in this part of Africa. When substantial rain falls, dunes transform into lush, green landscapes for a brief time as plants take full advantage of the moisture. An extratropical cyclone over the Sahara Desert drenched parts of Morocco and Algeria – bringing up to a year’s worth of rain to some areas. 🌧️ …
