31-member Indian contingent to battle across 4 sports – Preview

India is geared up for this year’s first major multi-sport mega event, sending a 31-player contingent to the Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China, from April 22 to 30. This will be the sixth edition of the Asian Beach Games, which are returning to the international calendar after a decade-long wait, since the 2016 edition in Da Nang, Vietnam. The games feature 62 medal events across 14 sports, including many unique sports like Aquathlon, Beach Handball, Teqball and Beach Kabaddi. India had won 46 medals, including 12 gold medals, from the first five editions, and this time will compete in 18 medal events across four sports: 3×3 Basketball, Beach Kabaddi, Beach Wrestling, and Sailing. Beach Kabaddi has been the most successful sport for India, having won seven gold medals so far – All five in the women’s and 2 golds in the men’s edition. The Indian sports ecosystem continues to grow stronger with each passing year with franchise-based leagues have becoming a norm across sports. Indian sailing is now also entering this field of the sports market with the introduction of the first-ever Indian Sailing League in Shillong from 27 to 31 March, 2026. The inaugural edition of the league will take place at the Umiam Lake, with 14 franchises and 182 sailors from various countries like Russia, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia & Sri Lanka expected to be in action. The competition will have Olympic categories of ILCA 6, ILCA 7 and 420 Class, alongside the youth competition in ILCA 4 boys and girls, and Optimist categories. Winners of international sailing competition felicitated

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Saturday felicitated the winners of the India International Youth Sailing Championship 2026. The Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu organised the competition at the Chennai Port from January 6 to 9. A total of 87 sailors from eight countries, aged between 12 and 18, took part in the competition. Of them, 27 sailors representing India were from Tamil Nadu. The Indian team topped the medal tally with 12 medals, including six gold, three silver and three bronze. Mr. Udhayanidhi felicitated the winners at a function held in Chennai. SDAT 11th India International Youth Sailing Championship 2026 set to sail in Chennai

Chennai will once again take centre stage on the international sailing calendar as the SDAT 11th India International Youth Sailing Championship (IIR) 2026 gets underway from January 4-10 at Chennai Port. India’s longest-running international youth sailing regatta will feature 117 sailors from 13 countries, competing across five elite youth classes — 420, 29er (Boys & Girls Skiff), ILCA 4 (Boys & Girls Dinghy), Optimist (Boys & Girls) and iQFOIL Youth Windsurfing (Boys & Girls). Organised under the aegis of the Yachting Association of India (YAI) and the Asian Sailing Federation, and hosted by the Tamil Nadu Sailing Association (TNSA) with the support of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), the event reinforces Chennai’s reputation as the country’s premier sailing destination. It’s fairly common to see a hockey team take off its goalkeeper when chasing a match, fielding 11 outfield players and going on an all-out attack. But what happened in Madurai on Tuesday at the FIH Men’s Junior World Cup was rather extraordinary. In their last Pool D match against Egypt, when leading 1-0 after the first quarter, Belgium decided to take their goalkeeper Alexis van Havere off. Egypt nearly scored immediately with an aerial into the circle before being thwarted by a desperate goal-line clearance by a defender. Still, Belgium’s situation was such that they simply had to take that risk and not worry about the downsides. The only way Belgium could reach the quarterfinals was to beat Egypt by a massive margin to sneak in as the second-best second-placed team across the six pools. The NCC Directorate Maharashtra flagged off the ‘Konkan Vijay 2026’ Open Sea Sailing Expedition, undertaken by the Most Enterprising Naval Unit (MENU) of the Directorate, a statement said on Monday. The 10-day expedition, which embodies the spirit of “Swaccha, Sundar and Samriddha Konkan” (Clean, Beautiful and Prosperous Konkan), will see 60 Naval NCC cadets sailing 127 nautical miles along the scenic Konkan coastline. The team will make port calls at Ranpar, Ambolgad, Purnagad, Dhaulwali and Vijaydurg, an official statement said. The voyage, supported by the Indian Navy’s Western Naval Command and the Indian Coast Guard, aims to foster seamanship, teamwork, adventure spirit, and coastal environmental awareness among the cadets. The expedition was flagged off by Brigadier R.K. Brigadier Suresh G., Group Commander, NCC Group Kollam, flagged off the expedition which has 65 cadets, including 35 boys and 30 girls from all districts of Kerala and Lakshadweep. They will sail through the Ashtamudi and Vembanad lakes in three DK Whaler boats. On Friday, the expedition set out from Thevally jetty, Kollam. Navigating the National Waterway-3 (NW 3), it will turn around at the Pathiramanal Island Bird Sanctuary. The entire expedition is divided into eight phases. There are night halts at Klappana, Purakkad, Punnamada and Kannankara. An extensive recce had been undertaken by the staff of 3(Kerala) Naval Unit NCC to identify potential hazards along the route. The cadets were put through strenuous training by their Units/Groups to prepare them for the expedition. With just over two months to go for the Paris Olympics 2024, the excitement is on the rise, and the qualification scenarios are intensifying everywhere. While most sports have finalized their participants for Paris, a few spots still remain. Nethra Kumanan secured her ticket to the Paris Olympics through the Emerging Nations Program (ENP), despite not finishing in the top three positions in the final ranking of the Women’s One-Person Dinghy, ILCA 6 event, at the Last Chance Regatta in Hyères, France on Friday. The star Indian sailor will be heading to her second consecutive Olympics. She finished in 5th position in the final ranking with a total of 67 net points out of 10 races. The top three sailors secured direct quotas for the Olympics, while one quota was reserved for the best-placed non-qualified ENP sailor. Nethra also qualified for the medal race, where she finished in 5th position to confirm her spot at the prestigious event. She is the second Indian sailor to secure a spot at the Paris Olympics after Vishnu Saravanan in the men’s ILCA7 event.
