Triple Jumper Praveen Chithravel qualifies for Asian Games with effort of 16.92m

4 min readJun 26, 2026 11:47 PM IST Despite the Kalinga Stadium track being unduly bouncy due to afternoon rain, national triple jump record holder Praveen Chithravel soared 16.92m to win the title at the inter-state athletics championships and book his berth for the upcoming Asian Games. Chithravel was pushed all the way by veteran Kartik Unnikrishnan, who finished second with 16.80m while NCAA champion Selva Prabhu managed 16.79m to win the bronze medal. In all, six jumpers cleared the qualification mark of 16.28m and made it to the continental mega event to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan from September 19-October 4. At the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Praveen failed to progress beyond the qualification round with a best jump of 16.74m. He has been trying to make up for that disappointment ever since. “I have lost a lot in the last two years. I was crying in Japan after failing to qualify for the World Championships final. In 2022, eleven months after giving birth to a baby boy, Seema stood inside the throwing circle of Bhim Stadium, Bhiwani unable to release the disc. Fast forward to 2025, she decided the goal medal of women’s discus throw at the ongoing National Games on Saturday with her first throw of 52.58m. The 24-year-old from Haryana went on to clinch the gold medal in the event with a best throw of 52.70m. While her movement of releasing the disc from the hand was smooth, the journey hasn’t been the same. Mother to a two-and-half-year-old son Rudra, Seema restarted her athletic journey after a hiatus of three years due to a knee injury, the pandemic and the arrival of her baby. At the moment, the discus thrower is juggling between her kid, sport, and a PhD degree. “I am happy with the medal but not happy with the throw as my target was to break the 24-year-old meet record of 55.45m,” Seema told The Indian Express after her medal-winning feat.
