Neeraj Chopra to return as AFI announces India’s Commonwealth Games squad

According to the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra has recovered well from the back injury and is likely to begin his 2026 season in the next 10 days. Neeraj was named on Sunday in the 32-member Indian athletics contingent, including 22 men and 10 women, for the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games scheduled from July 23 to August 2. “Neeraj is now training and getting ready to compete probably in the next 10 days or so. He is recovering well and recovering fast,” AFI vice-president Adille Sumariwalla confirmed during a press conference on Sunday. He, however, maintained that Chopra will have to meet the qualification criteria of 82.61m to secure his place in the Indian team. “He will have to attain the qualification standard,” Sumariwalla said. Selva Prabhu clinches the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Triple Jump title

Indian triple jumper Selva Prabhu bagged the triple jump gold medal at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA, on Friday. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Competition is the university based competiton held in the United States, known as one of the most prolific college programs. The 21-year-old leapt 16.92m in the final to top the 24-athlete field and win the title, becoming the first men’s outdoor triple jump champion for his university, Kansas State, since 1986. Although he struggled to find the board on four ocassions, but his second attempt of 16.92m proved enough to win the gold ahead of Kevin Kemboi’s 16.84m. This is his second medal at the NCAA Nationals this year, following Indoor Nationals in March, where he breached the 17-m mark for the first time to win a silver medal (17.05m). Selva, who won a silver medal at the U20 World Championships in 2022 and is the U20 national record holder, jumped 17.05m on Saturday to set the new indoor national record. This is the first time Selva has breached the 17m mark recording his new personal best. Apart from the Indian national indoor record, Selva also made a new school record for his college Kansas State City. He surpassed the previous record of 17.03m from Vince Parette in 1980, the jump almost a foot and a half farther than his previous best. It’s now taken him all the way to Manhattan, the Kansas town of a population just over 54,000 and nicknamed ‘Little Apple’. On January 14, the 20-year-old joined Kansas State University. It’s a chance for the English literature graduate to complete higher education. More crucially, in an Olympic cycle that culminates with the Games in Los Angeles, the former Junior World Championship silver medallist has secured a spot in the American college sports system, the NCAA. It’s a less-trodden path for an Indian athlete. Yet, those who stitched together Prabhu’s move are hoping that others, like the triple jumper, will take the leap. “We are in talks with people.
