He was inaugurating a convention to announce protests by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) for the protection of education rights with the theme ‘Release Central funds meant for Kerala’ and ‘Prevent saffronisation of universities’ here on Wednesday. He alleged that the Union government was trying to implement Hindutva agenda in the education sector. Attempts were on to teach students distorted history and unscientific things. Corporatisation of education was another aim of the BJP government. Violent clash erupts between lawyers and SFI activists at Ernakulam Court in Kochi, 20 injured

Tensions flared at the Ernakulam District Court premises on Friday after a violent clash broke out between a group of lawyers and alleged members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), leaving nearly 20 people injured. The incident unfolded during the annual celebrations of the District Bar Association. According to police reports, the altercation resulted in injuries to 16 SFI activists and 8 lawyers. Eyewitnesses and police sources suggest that the situation escalated quickly after a group of SFI activists allegedly trespassed into the celebration venue and disrupted the event, triggering a scuffle. Lawyers involved in the clash accused the activists of intentionally provoking them by creating a ruckus during the festivities. A day after violent protests against State Education Minister Bratya Basu at Jadavpur University (JU) in Kolkata on Saturday, sevens FIRs were filed on Sunday at the local police station in connection with the incident and a former JU student was arrested in connection with a an arson incident later on Saturday, police said on Sunday. Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma told mediapersons, “The police suo motu filed two FIRs and five other FIRs were filed by different organisations.” Basu was allegedly heckled and his vehicle gheraoed and vandalised by students during a protest that erupted during Basu’s visit to the Jadavpur University (JU) in Kolkata on Saturday. The protesters, however, alleged that some students among them were injured after being hit by the minister’s convoy on the campus. The Students Federation of India (SFI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] have come down on Governor Arif Mohammad Khan for his alleged interference in the nomination of Senate members at Kannur University. They alleged that the Chancellor’s actions had compromised the integrity of the nomination process. According to the SFI, Mr. Khan ignored the varsity’s recommendations and replaced 14 of the 16 eminent nominees with individuals affiliated to the Congress and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). SFI State president K. Anushree and secretary P.M. Arsho issued a statement denouncing the Chancellor’s actions and pledging strong resistance against what they perceived as attempts to undermine higher education in Kerala. The college anti-ragging committee that looked into the death of a veterinary student in Kerala’s Wayanad district said in its report that while he had been subjected to physical assault by several students before he was found hanging in the hostel, the reasons for the assault and “actual cause of death” are “still obscure”. J S Sidharthan, a second-year student at the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Wayanad’s Pookode was found dead in the college hostel on February 18 in what was suspected to be suicide. So far, 20 students, including four office-bearers of the Students Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the CPI(M), have been arrested in connection with the case. In the days before his death, Sidharthan was allegedly tortured, assaulted, and put on public trial by the accused students.
