The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Tripura will begin on September 5, chief electoral officer (CEO) Brijesh Pandey said on Friday. Officials said that over 3,356 booth-level officers (BLOs) and 375 BLO supervisors would be deployed for the SIR exercise across the state. The qualifying date for the SIR in Tripura is October 1, while the exercise would begin on September 5 and conclude with the final publication of the electoral roll on December 23,” the CEO said at the Civil Secretariat. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has extended the schedule for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Odisha and Telangana after the two states sought additional time to complete different stages of the exercise, according to official communications issued on Friday. The extension is expected to provide election machinery in both states additional time to complete door-to-door verification. (PTI) In Odisha, the ECI has pushed back the deadline for filing claims and objections by 15 days to August 19 from the earlier August 4, while the disposal of claims and objections will now continue until September 17. The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure that election-related duties assigned to schoolteachers do not impose an “unbearable” burden on them, observing that teachers engaged in poll work after spending 6-8 hours in classrooms may undergo considerable stress. A Division Bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia passed the direction while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the deployment of government school teachers for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the national capital.
