Ski mountaineering makes Olympic debut on snowy day as Marianne Fatton of Switzerland wins 1st gold | Sport-others News

They skied uphill through a diamond-shaped pattern and climbed a flight of on-slope stairs in their ski boots. Far from done, they endured more lung-searing climbing, with skis back on, and then a downhill dash to the finish line. All the while, their course looked like a giant snow globe with Mother Nature adding to the scene. Now that’s an entrance. The sport of ski mountaineering made its long-awaited Olympics debut Thursday and crowned its first champion at the Milan Cortina Games in Marianne Fatton of Switzerland. Shortly after, Oriol Cardona Coll of Spain followed suit to take the men’s race. A win for them, though, was a win for a niche Alpine sport that traces its roots back to the late 19th century. “It’s a magical day,” said Fatton, who’s also the reigning world champion. “It’s history for our sport, and for us as athletes, and it’s wonderful.” With snow falling, Fatton navigated the uphill-then-downhill sprint course in a time of 2 minutes, 59.77 seconds. She edged Emily Harrop of France by 2.38 seconds. …

DRI Nagpur seizes leopard skins and ivory from two men in Ujjain

In a significant crackdown on wildlife trafficking, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Nagpur Unit under the Mumbai Zonal Unit, seized two leopard skins — complete with heads — and an ivory item, later identified as a wild boar horn, from two individuals in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. The operation was conducted on the morning of May 4, 2025, following specific intelligence inputs indicating an attempt to sell wildlife articles illegally. Acting swiftly, the DRI team intercepted the suspects at a hotel in Ujjain city and recovered the protected wildlife items from their possession. After the successful seizure, both the accused and the confiscated items were handed over to the District Forest Division in Ujjain for further investigation under the provisions of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. Leopards are listed under Schedule I of the Act, offering them the highest level of protection. The trade, sale, purchase, or possession of leopard skins or any part of the animal is strictly prohibited. The ivory, initially reported, was identified as a wild boar horn — also protected …

Dbrand’s new glow-in-the-dark skins have a circuit board texture you can feel

Dbrand’s new glow-in-the-dark skins have a circuit board texture you can feel

Dbrand’s latest gadget skins capitalize on our curiosity to peek inside our electronics. Its new Circuit Board collection, created in collaboration with LinusTechTips, features a complex pattern that looks like a functional PCB because the pattern was created with the assistance of engineers that design actual circuit boards. The company describes the complex design of the new skin collection as being an “accurate representation of a printed circuit board” but it don’t represent a functional PCB copied from an actual device. Instead, the pattern is a “mosaic of functional circuit board elements,” Dbrand CEO Adam Ijaz tells The Verge, that showcases components like resistors, capacitors, and traces laid out in a schematic that prioritizes aesthetics over functionality. If you’re after a more authentic PCB appearance, you may want to instead opt for Dbrand’s X-Ray skins made using actual X-rays of 125 different devices including smartphones and laptops. Don’t want your devices glowing? Dbrand offers two versions of this wrap that don’t glow in the dark.Image: Dbrand The new Circuit Board skins are printed using Dbrand’s …

Primitive Humans in Scandinavia Used Boats Made Up of Animal Skins in 3500 BC, Study Suggests

A new study suggests that people from the Pitted Ware Culture (PWC) in ancient Scandinavia likely built boats from animal skins, possibly seal hides, to fish, hunt, and trade. The PWC was a Neolithic group of hunter-gatherers who lived between 3500 and 2300 BC in regions near the Baltic and North Seas. Their survival heavily depended on the seas, where they relied on maritime activities, particularly seal hunting, as evidenced by the large quantities of seal bones discovered at their inhabited sites. Seal Hides and Maritime Travel Mikael Fauvelle, a researcher at Lund University in Sweden told Live Science, seals were not only hunted for food but also played a key role in making watercraft. Seal hides, along with oil extracted from their blubber, may have been used to construct and maintain boats. Archaeologists have found traces of seal oil inside pottery, showing that these people had significant quantities of it. Boats made from such materials were sturdy enough for long voyages, which was essential given their reliance on sea travel, as per a study …

Oreo’s Xbox-themed cookies unlock Forza, Halo, and Sea of Thieves skins

Microsoft has teamed up with Oreo once again to create Xbox-themed Oreo cookies. There are six custom Xbox cookie designs in total, with one featuring the Xbox logo and additional cookies for each controller button and a directional arrow. The cookies are based on Oreo’s classic cookie-and-creme combination, but the packs will include special codes to unlock Oreo-themed armor packs or vehicle skins. In Halo Infinite there is Oreo-themed armor, which literally looks like a Spartan that has been dunked in an Oreo-flavored milkshake. Forza Horizon 5 players will get access to a vehicle skin that looks very cookie-like, and Sea of Thieves players get an entire ship skin that’s more black than it is white. These special edition cookies will be available in 22 countries starting this month, and will be available “while stocks last.” Microsoft doesn’t list the full 22 countries, but the promotion appears to be limited to European markets and it looks like the cookies will first be available on January 16th, according to Oreo’s website. This isn’t the first time …
