The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday announced an imposition of penalty notice worth ₹184 under Foreign Exchange Management Act against NewsClick and its Editor-in-Chief Prabir Purkayastha, officials said. (Photo by Raj K Raj/ Hindustan Times) The ED initiated its probe after a Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing registered a case against NewsClick and its founder in 2020 in connection with money allegedly received from overseas. On the basis of the FIR, the ED also conducted searches on the premises of NewsClick and several other places in connection with money allegedly received from overseas. The federal agency had raided Purkayastha’s premises in September 2021 in connection with a money laundering probe and later attached a flat in New Delhi’s Saket linked to him. Purkayastha was arrested in October 2023 by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police in a different case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Cricketer-turned-sports administrator Ganguly had also lodged a police complaint against Uttam Saha of ‘Argentina Football Fan Club’ on Thursday (December 18, 2025). “Besides the police complaint, I have sent this official of the football fan club a ₹50 crore legal notice. They keep saying anything that comes to their mind,” Ganguly told PTI. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday issued notices to the private hotel adjoining the Digambar Jain Temple at Vile Parle, parts of which were demolished last week. The civic body’s move came a day after BMC authorities carried out an inspection of the hotel premises. Civic officials said the notices were served under Section 53 (1) of the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act (MRTP), 1966, for unauthorised construction.  Earlier, a notice under similar sections were issued to the temple trust, before the civic authorities carried out  demolition of the building. According to the BMC’s Act, the recipients of the notices are given a 30-day timeline for replying to the notice. “The hotel dates back to 1977 and with time, some changes have been implemented in the structure. We have compared these changes with the approved plan, that is available with the BMC’s Development Planning (DP) department, and sent them notices.
