If you compare the Apple Watch Ultra 3 with the Ultra 2, you probably wouldn’t be able to tell they were made with drastically different manufacturing processes. The titanium Apple Watch Series 11 and Ultra 3 are not only made with 100 percent recycled titanium powder, but are also 3D-printed, a process that’s pretty impressive at Apple’s scale. 3D printing creates less waste, in this case cutting raw materials usage for the watch cases in half, but introduces new challenges, like balancing speed and precision. Apple has released more details about its process, which involves blasting titanium dust with a laser. Over 900 layers of material, each 60 microns thick, go into a single watch case (for context, one micron is equal to 0.001 millimeters). The titanium powder used for the cases has to be fine-tuned itself to reduce its oxygen content so it won’t explode when exposed to high heat. Whoop is in damage control mode. After debuting its Whoop 5.0 fitness tracker, users were angered to find it had reneged on a promise of free hardware upgrades. In a new Reddit post, the company now says users who have been members for over 12 months can get the Whoop 5.0 for free. Part of the outrage was prompted by Whoop’s confusing messaging. Early yesterday morning, my colleague Victoria Song reported that to get a Whoop 5.0 band, users would need to extend their existing membership by an additional 12 months or pay a one-time upgrade fee. However, until at least March 28th of this year, Whoop’s website had a blog post that said users would only need to have been a member for at least six months to get a free upgrade to next-gen hardware. After the backlash, Whoop is now changing its tune — somewhat. Existing and new Garmin users will be able to opt in to a free 30-day trial and then choose between a $6.99 monthly or $69.99 annual subscription. All existing health data and features, however, will remain free. “Developing a premium tier enables us to extend our investment in the Garmin Connect platform, both in terms of features that carry additional cost to provide and also in scaling out our engineering teams to build and maintain these features,” says Garmin spokesperson Natalie Miller.
