Srinagar Police attach Rs 1.5 crore property of drug peddler under NDPS Act crackdown

Continuing its intensified crackdown against drug trafficking under the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir Abhiyaan, Srinagar Police on Tuesday attached immovable property worth approximately Rs 1.5 crore belonging to a notorious drug peddler. As per the official statement from the police, “Officials from Rainawari Police Station, acting under the provisions of Section 68-F of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, attached a single-storey residential house along with land measuring 11 marlas belonging to accused Bilal Ahmad Patoo, Saidakadal, Srinagar. After initial questioning by airport security, the duo were handed over to the Jammu and Kashmir Police for questioning. Police sources said that on Sunday, airport security recovered a satellite communicator and GPS device from the possession of a traveller during the standard security check at the airport. The traveller was identified as Jeffry Scott Prather, a citizen of the United States. He was immediately detained along with his fellow traveller, who police sources said is a US citizen of Indian origin. According to sources, a Garmin satellite communicator and a Garmin GPS device were found in Jefery Scott Prather’s luggage. The GPS device was manufactured in Taiwan. The devices work through the Iridium satellite network, which covers the entire globe and provides access in the most remote areas, including high-altitude regions. Despite the Centre on Saturday revoking the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act, protests planned for March 16 across Ladakh will go ahead as scheduled. On March 13, the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) had announced that the people of Ladakh would take to the streets again as the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) was “dragging its feet” on extending guarantees sought by the union territory. Two bodies representing socio-political and religious groups in Ladakh — KDA and Apex Body Leh — have been in talks with the Centre as part of a high-powered committee (HPC) under the MHA to press various demands of the region. It said the content in question, prima facie, reflected dissemination of distorted narratives and unverified information capable of causing public unrest and societal disharmony. “Such deliberate attempts to spread misinformation pose a serious threat to peace, security and overall stability. Jammu city recorded a minimum temperature of 8.3 degrees Celsius, Katra town 7.5 degrees Celsius, Batote 1.6 degrees Celsius, Banihal minus 1.1 degrees Celsius and Bhaderwah minus 2 degrees Celsius.
