In Punjab polls, huge stakes for Opposition

In Punjab polls, huge stakes for Opposition

The poll bugle was sounded in Punjab last week with the results of the local body polls. The Aam Aadmi Party, stung by the defection of seven Rajya Sabha members and a plethora of corruption charges, must be smiling. It won the largest chunk of local body seats, leaving the Congress a distant second. It is a boost for the beleaguered party and its embattled chief minister Bhagwant Mann, who has courted controversy regularly. It is a sign that the party machinery on the ground is alive and kicking, and Mann’s welfare agenda is popular. In a volatile state where the 2021 farm law protests fundamentally reshaped politics, the local body polls are a virtual semi-final for the assembly elections just months away. The AAP, which stormed to power in a landslide in 2022, starts from pole position. But it should not celebrate just yet. After all, in 2021, the Congress swept the local body elections, only to be booted out of power months later in the assembly polls. In a volatile state where the …

The Mandalorian and Grogu: This safe Star Wars adventure starring Pedro Pascal could benefit more from higher stakes

The Mandalorian and Grogu: This safe Star Wars adventure starring Pedro Pascal could benefit more from higher stakes

We live in an era where franchises and cinematic universes guarantee instant attention. Box office numbers matter later, but the first victory lies in dominating conversation. The Mandalorian and Grogu enjoys that. What works in it’s favour, is that it functions effectively as a standalone adventure despite being deeply rooted in the larger Star Wars mythology and continuing from the TV series The Mandalorian. You can walk into the film with little to no knowledge of the decades-spanning franchise and still find yourself thoroughly engaged by it’s world and characters. A still from the film. Directed by Job Favreau, the story revolves around The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu, his ward. He is tasked with catching Rotta The Hutt, the son of Jabba The Hutt. Nowhere like his father, he yearns for his freedom and reveals to The Mandalorian that his uncle and aunt placed a bounty on his head because they want to kill him. Mandalorian decides to be on Rotta’s side and thus begins a cat and mouse chase. Written by Jon Favreau, …

PM Modi, HM Shah to lead BJP’s high stakes Kerala push ahead of Assembly polls

With the campaign for the April 9 Assembly elections entering its decisive phase, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP is preparing an all out offensive in Kerala, deploying its top national leadership in a bid to script a historic breakthrough.  According to IANS, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other senior leaders comprising various Chief Ministers are set to descend on the state, underscoring the party’s determination to open its account in the 140 member Assembly. The party draws confidence from its recent electoral gains, most notably actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi’s emphatic victory in the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency, where he secured a margin exceeding 70,000 votes, reported IANS. Oil prices hit 6-month high: How US-Iran tensions could disrupt global supplies, with stakes for India | Explained News

Oil prices hit 6-month high: How US-Iran tensions could disrupt global supplies, with stakes for India | Explained News

International oil prices have hit a six-month high due to escalating tensions between the US and Iran, and growing concerns that Washington could launch military strikes against Tehran. Earlier this week, the second round of talks between US and Iranian envoys in Geneva over Tehran’s nuclear programme concluded with some progress, although still far from any concrete signs of an understanding that could allay fears of military action. The US has significantly built up its military presence in the region in recent weeks. Moreover, US President Donald Trump said Thursday (February 19) that Iran had 10-15 days to agree to a “meaningful deal” with Washington — a comment that is being interpreted as an ultimatum. Oil markets worry The reason why oil markets appear jittery is the apprehension that military action against Iran could choke oil supplies from the wider Gulf region, which accounts for the lion’s share of global oil exports. At the heart of the apprehensions is the risk that the regime in Tehran, if cornered and posed with an existential threat, could …

Harmanpreet Singh goes looking for a mental edge by staking out opponents’ mindsets, as stakes turn high in 2026 | Hockey News

Harmanpreet Singh goes looking for a mental edge by staking out opponents’ mindsets, as stakes turn high in 2026 | Hockey News

Harmanpreet Singh speaks like a spy on a covert mission. Mindset. Observation. What he’s watching — and how he knows they’re watching him. During the Hockey India League, the India captain closely studies foreign players. Their body-play, angles and little tricks to gain small but decisive advantages. It is not admiration alone. It is analysis. “How can we develop that? When I go back to the national team, how can I show it to my teammates there?” Then there’s Vincent Vanasch. The ‘best goalkeeper in the world’, Harmanpreet, one of the world’s best drag-flickers, says. Training sessions between the JSW Sports Soorma HC teammates aren’t merely that. “What is his mindset, what does he observe?” Harmanpreet wonders. “Or when I am playing against any opponent, how do their keepers observe me?” Because when Harmanpreet stands over a penalty corner, it’s never just about power. It’s psychological warfare. He wants to know how goalkeepers think — so he can think one move ahead. “I try to have good conversations with them so I know how to …

The Night Manager Season 2 review: Tom Hiddleston returns with higher stakes, delivers the thrills in binge-worthy ride

The Night Manager Season 2 review: Tom Hiddleston returns with higher stakes, delivers the thrills in binge-worthy ride

It has been a long wait for the second season of The Night Manager, almost a decade, and finally the show is here! The first season was enthralling and quite a ride when it debuted, offering us Tom Hiddleston as a military vet turned hotel manager who is recruited by British Intelligence for a secret mission. It was glamorous, edgy and never tried to be anything more than what it was. Susanne Bier kept that balance so well that she also ended up winning an Emmy. The good news here, I must say, is that the second season keeps all of that promise and more. Tom Hiddleston returns with new thrills in the second season of The Night Manager. The premise The second season picks up where the first season left off. The aftermath of Hugh Laurie’s send-off in the first season did not give away any such possible links that way, but the primal reasons remain. The stakes are higher than ever, as our man will soon learn. Tom Hiddleston, as suave and dashing …

Formula 4 Indian championship set for high stakes at Madras International Circuit

The FIA-certified Formula 4 Indian Championship (F4IC), part of the Indian Racing Festival, is all set for its season finale at the Madras International Circuit on December 13–14. After four rounds of close racing, the battle for the title has come down to three young drivers who have kept the championship alive till the last weekend. Fifteen-year-old Kenyan racer Shane Chandaria (Chennai Turbo Riders) arrives in Chennai as the points leader with 158. He has been the most consistent driver on the grid this year, mixing raw speed with calm race craft. His three wins, including a strong drive at Kari last month, have put him in a good position. But with the gaps this tight, nothing is guaranteed. Right behind him is French driver Sachel Rotgé (Kichcha’s Kings Bengaluru) with 134 points. He knows this track well and took two wins here in Round 2. He also picked up another victory in Coimbatore, giving him confidence heading into the finale. Indian youngster Ishaan Madesh (Kolkata Royal Tigers) sits third with 127 points and remains …
