The historic platform shelter constructed at the Nagapattinam railway station during the British era. | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement Rail users in Nagapattinam have urged the Southern Railway to declare the historic platform shelter constructed at the Nagapattinam Railway Station during the colonial era as a railway heritage structure.  The railway station building, with a unique and fully covered platform shelter, was constructed in 1861 by the South Indian Railway Company period. This unique closed platform shelter is a priceless engineering and historical asset, say the rail users.  Nagore Nagapattinam Rail Users Association president S. Mohan said as one of the oldest surviving railway structures in the Southern Railway zone, the fully covered platform shelter established on Platform 1 at the Nagapattinam station deserves permanent heritage protection without altering its original heritage character.  Mr. Mohan said the Chennai Egmore and the Nagapattinam railway stations during the British period were provided with fully covered train shelter using imported girders and iron columns.  Even after 165 years, the iron pillars remained strong and free from corrosion reflecting the …

The residential structure was valued at ₹2 crore, the spokesman said. Satheesan on Thursday (June 4, 2026) noted that “behind Kerala’s social achievements lies a fiscal structure that is under serious and growing strain.” The State currently faces a “large burden” of outstanding liabilities (₹5.07 lakh crore), committed expenditures (77% of total revenue receipts – TRR), and interest payments (20.9% of TRR), the document titled ‘Kerala’s Fiscal Health: A Status Report,’ noted. The State’s capital expenditure at 1.3% of its Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) is “one of the lowest” among Indian states despite running one of the highest Fiscal Deficits, it said. “Kerala has been violating the basic tenet of ‘borrow to invest, growth will repay’ in a big way, weakening the growth generating capacity,” the White Paper said. A vacation bench of Justice Advait Sethna and Justice Sandesh Patil noted that while the stay was sought on the basis of a claim that a representation was made before the charity commissioner, the petitioner was not a complainant. Last week, the court had refused to grant an urgent hearing on a plea seeking a restraining order on the trustees from passing or implementing any decision arising out of or connected with its proposed board meeting. The petitioner, a 61-year-old Thane resident, Suresh Patilkhede, had claimed that the premier public charitable trust is in violation of a 2025 amendment to the Maharashtra Public Trusts Act that caps the number of life trustees. The Maharashtra government approved the rollout of four-year undergraduate programmes, introducing honours and honours with research degrees from the 2026-27 academic year. The programmes are in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. What’s the new programme structure? A government resolution (GR) issued on Monday stated that the four-year undergraduate programme will be structured into eight semesters, offering two options after completion of the third year: a standard honours degree and an honours degree with research, news agency PTI reported.
