State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) Chairperson Alexander Thomas has sought the intervention of the Ernakulam District Collector for a probe by the Revenue Divisional Officer into an incident in which a woman sustained injuries after an iron piece fell on her car at the worksite of Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) on Civil Line Road near Padivattom. The Commission sought an inquiry into the cause of the accident, the nature of the woman’s injuries, the damage caused to her vehicle, the status of her compensation, and the steps taken by KMRL and its contractor to avoid similar incidents, the SHRC said in a release. The Collector was asked to file a comprehensive report before the Commission within three weeks. Chandigarh, The Haryana Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of increasing incidents of suicides, unnatural deaths, violence, mental health issues, overcrowding and inadequate psychological support systems in state prisons, as reflected in the NCRB’s “Prison Statistics India-2024” report. The commission observed that inmates cannot be deprived of their rights to live with dignity, health, protection and mental care guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution, merely because they are incarcerated. State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) Chairperson Alexander Thomas has ordered the civic authorities to repair potholes on Chembumukku Civil Line-Attipetti Nagar Road and SA Road. Besides repairing the pothole on Chembumukku Civil Line-Attipetti Road, a warning board and reflector should be set up at the site, the Commission said in its directive to the Thrikkakara municipal secretary. The municipal secretary should also submit a report to the Commission on the steps taken. Mr. Thomas said the Kochi Corporation secretary should take immediate action to fill the pothole near the Kadavanthra metro station on SA Road. Handrails should be installed at the site to prevent accidents. Warning boards should also be set up if necessary. The Commission directed the Corporation secretary to submit a report on the work done within a week. The Upalokayukta has registered a suo motu case against Tahsildar of Nagamangala taluk and others in connection with the case relating to alleged creation of fake documents for illegal grant of about 300 acres of Government land worth ₹200 crore in the taluk. A criminal case has also been registered against 11 persons involved in the alleged scam after a search by the officials showed large scale manipulation of Government land records to facilitate the illegal grant of public land. The report is expected to include the present health status of the outdoor and indoor patients of typhoid and the steps taken or proposed to ensure such incidents do not recur.
