The development comes after objections were raised to the Centre`s newly notified definition of the Aravalli mountain range, which is based on a 100-metre height criterion. Environmentalists have warned that the revised definition could open up vast stretches of the ancient mountain range across Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat to mining activities. Environmentalist Neelam Ahluwalia, a member of the Aravalli Virasat Jan Abhiyaan, has demanded that the Supreme Court recall its November 20 order and that the Centre withdraw the new definition. The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has registered a suo motu case over the alleged suicide of a 14-year-old boy on January 15, which his family had since attributed to ragging at his school. The Kochi City police had earlier launched an inquiry into the incident after his mother petitioned the Chief Minister and the State Police Chief alleging that ragging at his school led her son to take his own life. The petition had since been forwarded to District Police Chief (Kochi City) Putta Vimaladitya. The Thrikkakara Assistant Commissioner has been entrusted with the inquiry. The Hill Palace police had already registered a case of unnatural death after the incident and a probe was underway. “A suo motu case has been registered. Besides, a notice will be issued to the District Police Chief (Kochi City) and the Station House Officer of the station concerned asking for reports,” said K.V. The division bench, comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Kshetarpal, acted after reviewing news reports published in two daily newspapers. According to reports, on Sunday, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) was accompanying a judge who had come to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Suddenly, a man snatched the ASI’s pistol and fatally shot himself. The individual who committed suicide has yet to be identified. In its observation, the division bench noted, “There is definitely a lapse in security, and therefore, the Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab, is directed to appear before the court via video conferencing tomorrow at 10 am.” Meanwhile, Saurav Khurana, Additional Advocate General for Punjab, has been instructed to seek updates on the investigation.
