Apple Supplier Flex’s Workers Stage One-Day Strike at Tamil Nadu Plant

Hundreds of workers at a manufacturing plant of Apple supplier Flex in India’s Tamil Nadu state staged a one-day strike on Friday, demanding higher wages for the next three years and the recognition of a union. Many electronics manufacturers in India, including Foxconn and Pegatron, lack a union, while automobile factories have higher levels of organising, according to labour welfare workers. At Flex, unhappy over wages and policies, including tour allowances and medical leaves, all permanent workers, about 750, joined the Centre of Indian Trade Union, said union secretary E. Muthukumar. He added Flex, which makes chargers for Apple, was unwilling to recognise the union at the plant, which employs roughly 4,000 people, including contractors who did not join the strike. “Our values-based culture supports fair and competitive compensation for work, and open and transparent communication. Our doors are open and we encourage employees to share their perspectives,” Flex said in a statement. Workers will return to the factory for the third and final shift, Muthukumar said, adding the union will decide on the next …

Apple Supplier Foxconn Expects Quarterly Sales to Fall as iPhone Doubts Grow

Hon Hai Precision Industry warned of its fourth consecutive decline in quarterly sales after a 5.4 percent slide in the last three months of 2023 suggested consumer electronics demand remains muted. The Taiwanese firm, also known as Foxconn, reported a steep 27 percent drop in December sales to NT$460.1 billion ($14.8 billion, or roughly Rs. 1,23,073 crore), concluding a NT$1.85 trillion quarter. It now sees sales falling in the current period as well, adding to concern about the latest iPhone generation’s momentum heading into the new year. As Apple’s foremost iPhone assembly partner, Foxconn provides insight into broad consumer demand for personal tech. Apple’s iPhone 15 went on sale in September, to a mixed early reaction in key markets: the US saw it kickstart an upgrade cycle from earlier iterations while sales in China declined. China will again be a focal point of challenges for the iPhone this year, as the ban on the handset and other Apple hardware at Chinese agencies and state-backed companies has widened and local tech giant Huawei Technologies is reclaiming …

iPhone 15 Pro Series Could Feature Solid-State Buttons, Hints Apple Supplier: Report

Recent reports have hinted that the upcoming Apple iPhone 15 Pro may have a frame made of titanium with a rounded back. The material is more expensive than stainless steel that is found on recent and currently available ‘Pro’ models from the brand. Another note by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also claimed that Apple would switch to solid-state buttons with the iPhone 15 Pro models and also include three Taptic engines. Turns out that an Apple component supplier may have just vaguely hinted at the same, leading to a higher possibility of solid-state buttons arriving on the next iPhone. As reported by MacRumours, Apple supplier Cirrus Logic in a letter to shareholders confirmed that it would continue to “engage with a strategic customer” and that it plans to bring “a new HPMS component to market in smartphones next year.” This component could be the company’s “high-performance mixed-signal chips”, which MacRumours claims includes haptic drivers for the Taptic Engine in iPhone models. Another vague hint comes from Cirrus Logic CEO John Forsyth, who on a recent earnings …

iPhone Supplier Foxconn Appoints Former TSMC, SMIC Executive as Semiconductor Strategy Officer

Major Apple supplier and iPhone assembler Foxconn said on Tuesday it had hired Chiang Shang-yi, a former top executive at Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC and Chinese chipmaker SMIC, to lead its growing push in the chip business. Foxconn, the world’s largest contract electronics maker, is best known for assembling iPhones and other Apple products, though in recent years it has been expanding into chips to diversify its business. It bought a chip plant from Taiwan chipmaker Macronix International last year and in September announced a joint venture with India’s Vedanta to set up semiconductor and display production plants there. Foxconn said in a statement that Chiang had been appointed its semiconductor strategy officer, a newly created role. The company said his deep experience in the industry would provide “invaluable support” and technical guidance for the group’s global semiconductor deployment strategy. “We are grateful to have such a seasoned semiconductor veteran join us at this important juncture in the group’s development,” Foxconn Chairman Liu Young-way added in the statement. Chiang previously worked as vice president of research …
